Quick answer
Yes, a new furnace can be installed the same day or the next day when three things line up: the size you need is in local distributor stock, the new furnace vents the same way as the old one, and an install crew has an open day. A chimney-to-sidewall venting conversion, gas line or duct changes, or a special-order model push it to several days.
You can get a new furnace installed the same day in some cases, and the next day in many more, but the answer depends on the house as much as on the contractor. The installation itself takes most of a working day. What decides the date is whether the right furnace is sitting on a shelf nearby and whether it fits the space, the venting and the gas line the old one leaves behind.
What makes a same-day or next-day furnace installation possible
- A common size in local stock. Distributors serving the GTA and Hamilton keep the high-volume sizes of mainstream brands on hand through the heating season, so availability is a phone call and not a guess.
- Like-for-like venting. If the furnace being replaced is already high-efficiency, the plastic intake and exhaust pipes, the condensate drain and the wall terminations exist. The installer still confirms the old vent pipe is a type and size the new furnace's manual accepts.
- Ductwork and gas line that fit. The supply plenum and return drop need only a sheet-metal transition to the new cabinet, and the gas line is already the right size.
- An open install slot. The job needs a crew for the day, and in a January cold snap that is the scarce item, not the furnace.
- A decision made early. The site visit, the written quote and your signature all have to happen before a truck can be loaded.
What rules out a same-day furnace install
- A chimney-to-sidewall venting conversion. Replacing a mid-efficiency furnace that vents into the chimney means coring through the foundation wall or rim joist, running new plastic vent pipe and adding a condensate drain or pump. Expect this in 1970s–90s subdivisions still on an original or second furnace.
- An orphaned water heater. Once the furnace leaves the chimney, a gas water heater left venting into it alone may need a chimney liner before the job is complete.
- Gas line or duct modifications: an undersized gas line, a furnace being relocated, or a return duct that has to be enlarged.
- Special-order equipment: modulating models, unusual cabinet widths, low-profile units for crawl spaces and propane conversion kits for rural lots.
- No heat-loss calculation. Copying the size from the old furnace's label repeats whatever mistake was made last time. A CSA F280 heat-loss calculation needs measurements of the house; it can be done the same day, but it should not be skipped.
- A heat pump added alongside the furnace. Rebate approval under the Home Renovation Savings Program has to come before the install, so rushing forfeits it.
Holding the house while you wait for the install
A house with no furnace can be held safely for a day or two on electric heat, and knowing that removes the pressure to sign whatever is offered first.
- Run electric space heaters on separate circuits, plugged directly into the wall and clear of furniture, and switch them off when nobody is in the room.
- Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, and let a pencil-thin stream run from those taps overnight when it is well below freezing.
- Find the main water shut-off now. If the house will sit empty and cold, close it and open the taps to drain the lines.
- Put the heaters in the rooms with plumbing first, and close the doors to rooms you can do without.
- Keep combustion out of it: no oven, no barbecue, no outdoor propane heater inside.
The full routine is in keeping pipes from freezing when the furnace fails.
Do not sign a rental contract under no-heat pressure
The fastest offer on a no-heat day is often a rental: nothing down, installed tomorrow, and a term of 10 to 15 years with a rate that rises annually. The speed is real, but it is not unique to renting. A purchased furnace from stock goes in just as fast, costs $4,500–$7,500 installed, and can be financed with payments that end.
Before signing anything on the day, get the model number, the output in BTU/h, the list of what is included and the total price in writing. Ten minutes of reading does not delay the install. The longer comparison is in renting versus buying a furnace in Ontario.
Repair first, if the old furnace can be made to run
A dead furnace is not always a finished one. If the fault is an igniter, a flame sensor or a pressure switch, a $150–$450 repair can restore heat today and turn an emergency replacement into a planned one next week, with time to collect more than one quote. Ask for that option whenever the heat exchanger is sound.
The exceptions are a breached heat exchanger and a furnace that has been tagged unsafe: those stay off, and the electric heaters carry the house until the new unit is in.
ZK Mechanical will tell you, after a look at the existing furnace and its venting, whether your replacement is a stock, like-for-like job or one that needs a few days, and what is causing the difference. What the day involves is described on the furnace installation page. Call (647) 801-1252 or request a written quote.
