Weil-McLain is an American hydronic heating manufacturer, part of SPX Technologies, and its name is cast into the jacket of a great many radiator boilers in Ontario. We find them in pre-war brick houses in Hamilton, west Toronto and old Oakville, where the original gravity hot-water system was converted to a gas boiler with a circulator at some point in the last fifty years. The radiators and the big iron pipes are original. The boiler is usually the second or third one the house has had.
On the cast-iron models the iron itself is rarely what fails. What stops the heat is the equipment bolted around it: the vent damper, a safety switch on the draft hood, the pilot or igniter, the circulator, the expansion tank. Those are small, fixable faults, and a boiler that is dry underneath and burning clean is worth every one of them.
The condensing models are a different conversation. An Ultra has a cast aluminium heat exchanger and an Evergreen a stainless steel fire-tube one, and both make acidic condensate every hour they run. They are efficient and quiet, but they punish skipped maintenance in a way a CGa never will. When we open an Ultra that has gone five winters without service, we know what the inside will look like before the cover is off.
ZK Mechanical is an independent, owner-operated contractor with TSSA-licensed gas technicians. We service Weil-McLain equipment; we are not part of its distribution network and have no reason to push you toward a new one. If the heat is off today, our boiler repair service page sets out what the visit covers.
Weil-McLain lines we install and service
The atmospheric gas boiler most Ontario radiator homes have. It has a draft hood and an automatic vent damper on top and vents into a masonry chimney or B-vent. There is no fan and very little electronics, which is why it lasts and why most CGa repairs are a single part.
The same cast-iron sections with a small inducer fan pulling the flue gases through. It was sold for houses where a chimney was poor or absent, because it can vent through a side wall in the correct vent material. The extra parts are the inducer and the pressure switch that proves it is running.
The bigger atmospheric gas boiler, built in hot-water and steam versions. If your boiler has a glass gauge tube on the side showing a water line, it is the steam version, and it needs its low-water cut-off and water level looked at every heating season.
A modulating, sealed-combustion boiler with a cast aluminium heat exchanger, vented in plastic pipe through the wall. Weil-McLain's current Series 4 adds a coating to that exchanger. Every Ultra, coated or not, depends on correct system water chemistry and a clear condensate trap.
Weil-McLain's stainless steel fire-tube condensing boiler, listed by the manufacturer at 95% AFUE in the residential sizes. Stainless tolerates water chemistry better than aluminium does, but the burner, igniter and condensate trap still want an annual look.
What goes wrong on Weil-McLain equipment
Vent damper will not prove open, so the boiler never fires
On a CGa the thermostat call goes to the vent damper first. The actuator has to rotate the damper blade open and close an end switch before the gas valve gets any power. When the actuator motor seizes or its gears strip, the blade stays shut, the switch never makes, and the boiler sits silent with the thermostat calling. The repair is a new actuator or damper assembly matched to the flue size, not a bypass.
Spill switch or rollout switch trips: look at the chimney first
The spill switch on the draft hood opens when flue gas backs out into the basement instead of going up the chimney. The usual cause in an old house is the chimney itself: a collapsed clay liner, fallen mortar, a nest at the top. A rollout switch at the burner opening trips when flame leaves the firebox, typically because the flue passages between the sections are packed with soot. Do not keep resetting either one: both are carbon monoxide safeties, and the fix may be a chimney liner, not a switch.
Ultra locks out on ignition after skipped cleanings
The fire side of an aluminium heat exchanger sheds a gritty oxide that collects between the pins and washes into the condensate trap. Leave it for several seasons and the passages narrow, the trap blocks, the flame signal weakens and the control locks out on failed ignition. The repair is to open and clean the exchanger, flush the trap, renew the igniter and cover gasket where needed, then test the system water and dose inhibitor. That is the work a yearly boiler tune-up exists to do.
Relief valve dripping or pressure swinging with every cycle
This one is not a Weil-McLain part at all. A waterlogged expansion tank has no air cushion left, so pressure climbs as the water heats and the relief valve weeps onto the floor. Replacing the tank and setting its charge to match the fill pressure fixes it; replacing only the relief valve does not. The same visit is a sensible time to check the circulator and the fill valve.
Weil-McLain warranty: what to know
- Weil-McLain's residential warranty splits the heat exchanger from everything else. The current CGa literature lists a 20-year heat exchanger term and a 2-year parts term; older series were sold under their own certificates, so read the one that came with your boiler.
- On the Evergreen, Weil-McLain offers a five-year extended warranty on service parts only when the boiler is registered inside 90 days of installation, and only for residential installs.
- Labour is not part of the manufacturer's coverage. A successful claim gets you the component; the diagnostic and the hours to fit it are billed.
- Expect a heat exchanger claim on a condensing boiler to be read against the installation manual: water chemistry, inhibitor and yearly service. Keep every service invoice with the boiler paperwork.
- If you bought the house with the boiler already in it, do not assume the full term carried over. Check the certificate for what it says about the original owner.
Parts availability in the GTA
The cast-iron models are easy to keep running because so little on them is proprietary. Aquastats, gas valves, pilot assemblies, vent dampers, circulators, expansion tanks and relief valves are generic hydronic parts that Ontario heating wholesalers keep on the shelf. Ultra and Evergreen parts are different: igniters, flame rods, cover gaskets, blowers and control modules are Weil-McLain numbered items, and we confirm availability before we quote one. Replacement cast-iron sections for a leaking older boiler are the exception to all of this, and in practice a section leak ends the boiler.
Common questions
Is it safe to reset the spill switch and keep running my Weil-McLain?
No. A tripped spill switch means flue gas was coming into the basement, and resetting it only restarts the same condition. Leave the boiler off, make sure the carbon monoxide alarm near the bedrooms is working, and have the chimney and draft checked. If an alarm is already sounding, follow our steps for when a carbon monoxide alarm goes off and leave the house.
Should I repair my cast-iron Weil-McLain or replace it with a condensing boiler?
Repair it if the sections are dry and the fault is a control, a damper, a circulator or a tank. Replace it when a section leaks or the chimney can no longer vent it safely. A condensing replacement changes three things: the vent goes through the wall in plastic, a condensate drain is needed, and the gas line may need upsizing. Our guide to cast-iron versus condensing boilers sets out the trade-off.
What happens to my chimney if the boiler is replaced with a condensing one?
The new boiler stops using it. If a gas water heater still vents into that same chimney, it is now a small appliance alone in a large cold flue, and it usually needs a liner sized for it or its own replacement. That is the cost people miss when comparing quotes, so ask for it to be written into yours.
How often does a Weil-McLain Ultra need service?
Every year, before the heating season. The visit covers the fire side of the aluminium heat exchanger, the condensate trap, the igniter and flame rod, combustion readings and a test of the system water. Halton and Hamilton water is hard, so what goes into the system at fill-up matters; where the water tests poorly, a system flush and fresh inhibitor come before anything else.
What does a Weil-McLain boiler repair cost?
The diagnostic visit is $90–$150 and is folded into the repair if you go ahead. We do not publish a flat band for boiler parts because the spread between a vent damper actuator and a condensing control module is wide. You get the part, the labour and the total in writing before work starts. Our pricing page shows how quotes are built.
