ecobee was founded in Toronto in 2007 and has been owned by Generac since December 2021. It suits heat pumps for a practical reason: its settings expose the outdoor temperature thresholds that decide when a heat pump runs and when the gas furnace takes over. Those thresholds are the whole point of a hybrid system.
This page is for the person with the box in hand or a dead screen on the wall. If you are still choosing between brands, our ecobee vs Nest comparison is the better read. Here the question is how the thing gets wired, configured and kept running.
The pattern we see every summer is an ecobee that goes blank on the first humid week. The thermostat is fine. The air conditioner's drain has backed up, a float switch has opened the R circuit to stop the cooling, and because the ecobee has no battery it goes dark with it. Clearing the drain brings the screen back.
In 2000s and newer houses in Milton, Oakville and Brampton, the ecobee is often asked to run more than heating and cooling: a bypass humidifier on the furnace, an HRV in the mechanical room. It can, on the models with accessory terminals, but only when the accessory is both wired and declared in the equipment menu.
ecobee lines we install and service
The top model, with a built-in air quality monitor and occupancy sensing. It has ACC+ and ACC- terminals for one accessory: a humidifier, a dehumidifier or an HRV/ERV. This is the one to buy when the thermostat has to manage a hybrid heat pump and an accessory together.
The mid-range model without the air quality hardware. It handles conventional, heat pump and dual-fuel equipment and is the usual choice when the wall control only has to run heating and cooling well.
The entry models. The ecobee3 lite has no accessory terminals, so it cannot run a humidifier or an HRV. Check the Essential's supported wiring against your equipment before buying; the low price is no saving if it cannot drive your second stage.
Battery-powered sensors that report temperature and occupancy from other rooms so the thermostat can average them. They change what the thermostat aims for. They do not move more air to a cold bedroom, which is a duct problem and needs a duct answer.
Still common and still supported by the app. The earliest ecobee Smart used a separate equipment interface module mounted at the furnace, with only a few wires to the wall. If you have one, the furnace wiring lands on that module, not on the thermostat.
What goes wrong on ecobee equipment
Screen goes dark or the thermostat reboots
With no battery, an ecobee turns off the instant R power drops. The three usual causes are a tripped condensate float switch, a blown fuse on the furnace board, and a blower door that is not pressing its switch. A reboot loop that only happens when cooling starts points to a float switch on the edge of tripping or a loose common. Look for water in the drain pan under the indoor coil before anything else; AC drain line cleaning is the fix when it is full.
Power Extender Kit wired to the wrong terminals
The PEK sits at the furnace board and lets four conductors carry what normally takes five. It has its own labelled inputs and outputs, and one crossed pair gives you a fan that never stops or cooling that starts with the heat. It also needs the full four conductors to work with. A two-wire heat-only cable cannot use a PEK at all; that house needs a new cable or a separate transformer, which our C-wire installation visit sorts out.
Dual-fuel changeover set wrong
On a heat pump with a gas furnace, the furnace is declared as auxiliary heat and the two must never run together, because the indoor coil sits in the furnace's hot airstream. The ecobee then needs two numbers: the lowest outdoor temperature at which the compressor may run, and the highest at which the furnace may. Leave them at defaults and the system either burns gas on mild days or leans on the heat pump in deep cold. The right dual-fuel changeover temperature depends on your equipment and rates.
Humidifier or HRV on the ACC terminals does nothing
An accessory wired to ACC+ and ACC- stays off until it is added in the equipment settings, with the right type chosen: evaporative or steam for a humidifier, HRV or ERV for a ventilator. The one-wire versus two-wire choice matters too, since it decides whether the thermostat supplies the 24 V or only closes a contact. A humidifier that runs with no call for heat, or an HRV that never cycles, is almost always this menu.
ecobee warranty: what to know
- ecobee publishes a three-year limited warranty on its current smart thermostats. It has also advertised a five-year term for units installed by a professional, so check ecobee's warranty page for your model and keep the installation invoice.
- Refurbished units are sold under their own terms. Read the listing; do not assume the new-product term.
- The warranty is on the thermostat and the accessories supplied in its box. It does not pay for installation labour or for a furnace fuse blown during a do-it-yourself install.
- ecobee is the warrantor. A contractor can help you document a fault, but the replacement decision is ecobee's.
Parts availability in the GTA
There is nothing inside an ecobee to repair, so a failed unit is exchanged whole. The pieces that do get replaced are easy to find in the GTA: the Power Extender Kit, SmartSensors, the large trim plate that hides an old thermostat's outline, and the back plate. ecobee is sold through both retail stores and HVAC wholesalers here. The parts that fix most ecobee complaints are not ecobee parts: a blade fuse for the furnace board, a float switch, a length of thermostat cable.
Common questions
Does an ecobee need a C-wire?
It needs constant power on the C terminal, which is not quite the same thing. With five or more conductors in the wall, one becomes the common. With four, the Power Extender Kit at the furnace does the job without new cable; with two or three, plan on a new cable. Either way the thermostat ends up with steady 24 V, which is all it is asking for.
Is an ecobee a good match for a heat pump with a gas furnace?
Yes, provided it is configured as dual fuel and not as a heat pump with electric strips. The thermostat lets the installer set compressor and auxiliary lockout temperatures and uses outdoor temperature from its weather feed to switch between them. If your Wi-Fi is unreliable, tell us, because a hybrid system that depends on a weather feed needs a plan for when the feed is missing.
Will my ecobee keep heating if the Wi-Fi goes down?
Yes. The schedule and the heating and cooling control run on the thermostat itself, so a dropped internet connection only removes the app, voice control and weather data. A power failure is different: with the furnace off there is no 24 V, and the screen stays dark until power returns. It restarts on its own with settings intact.
Can you install an ecobee I bought myself?
Yes. Bring the model name when you call so we can confirm it suits your equipment before the visit. We wire it, fit the PEK if the cable needs it, set the equipment type, stages and thresholds, and run heat and cooling through a full cycle before leaving. Smart thermostat installation describes the visit step by step.
What does ecobee installation cost?
We quote it in writing after seeing two things: the cable at the wall and the control board at the furnace. A straight swap with a common already present is quick, and a PEK, a dual-fuel set-up or an HRV on the accessory terminals adds time. If the visit begins as a dead thermostat, it starts as a $90–$150 diagnostic. Published bands for other work are on our pricing page.
