Venmar & vanEE HRV Repair & Service

Venmar and vanEE HRV repair and service is one job under two badges: both names come from Venmar Ventilation in Quebec, part of Broan-NuTone, and the same motors, damper actuators and cores sit behind either one. The faults are predictable. A defrost actuator fails and the core freezes in a cold snap, a fan motor or its capacitor quits, or the wall control flashes and the unit will not change speed. We diagnose for $90–$150, folded into the repair, and tell you plainly when an obsolete motor makes replacement the better spend.

Ventilation cleaning inside a house

If your builder's paperwork says vanEE and the neighbour's says Venmar, you likely own the same machine. Venmar Ventilation sells one family of residential ventilators under both names, and Broan-badged units share the platform as well. For repair purposes the badge is irrelevant. What matters is the model and part number on the label inside the door.

These units went into a great many Ontario new-build subdivisions from the 1990s onward. In our service area that means the newer streets of Milton, Brampton, Georgetown, Stoney Creek, Burlington and Oakville, where the unit usually hangs from the basement joists near the furnace with a control in the main hallway.

The HRV models use a plastic core that is removed and washed; the ERV models use a core that transfers moisture and is cleaned differently. The motor, the defrost actuator and the electronic board are what wear out. A twenty-year-old cabinet with a sound core is common. A twenty-year-old motor that is still quiet is less so.

We handle Venmar and vanEE through our HRV and ERV repair service as an independent contractor in the Burlington, Hamilton and west GTA area. The honest limit on any repair is parts: once the motor for a cabinet is discontinued, money goes further on a new unit, and HRV and ERV installation covers what that involves.

Venmar & vanEE lines we install and service

Venmar AVS (contractor channel)

The line sold through heating contractors, including the E-series, the high-efficiency EKO 1.5 and the newer N and X series. Model names changed often over the years, so two units that look identical can take different motors.

Venmar Constructo

The builder-grade unit found in many subdivision basements, usually with a simple one-button wall control. It is the Venmar we replace motors and actuators on most often, simply because so many were installed.

vanEE Bronze, Silver and Gold

vanEE's tiers, running from the basic Bronze units such as the 60H and 90H up to the Gold series. The step up buys a more efficient core and motor and a better control, not a different kind of machine.

Older cabinets such as the vanEE 1001 and 2001

The 1990s units still running in many houses. They are the ones where parts availability decides the repair. We look up the motor before the visit when you can read us the model off the door label.

Wall controls

Venmar's Altitude, Deco-Touch, Lite-Touch and Simple-Touch controls, and vanEE's equivalents under other names. A control is matched to a generation of unit; a new control on an old cabinet, or the reverse, will not always communicate.

What goes wrong on Venmar & vanEE equipment

Defrost damper actuator failure and a frozen core

To defrost, the unit swings a damper across the fresh-air port and recirculates indoor air through the core. The actuator that moves the damper is a small geared motor, and it is the part most likely to fail on these cabinets. When it stops with the port open, a few nights of deep cold turn the core into a block of ice and the unit moves no air. We thaw the core, replace the actuator and run a defrost cycle before leaving.

Fan motor or capacitor failure

A unit that hums at the cabinet but pushes no air has a motor that cannot start, and the capacitor is the first thing we test. A motor that starts but whines or grinds has worn bearings and is replaced. On many of these units one motor turns both wheels, so a dead motor stops fresh air and exhaust at once. Running a seized motor until it trips its thermal protection is not a fix; unplug the unit.

Wall control flashing and the unit stuck on one speed

A blinking indicator on the control, or on the unit itself, means the two are not talking or the board has logged a fault. Start with two checks: the door must be fully latched, because a door switch cuts power when it is open, and the unit can be unplugged for a minute to reset. If the flashing returns, the cause is the low-voltage wiring, the control or the board, and the pattern's meaning is in the manual for that model.

Weak airflow from a dirty core, filters or hoods

Lint on the filters and a matted screen on the outdoor intake hood cut airflow long before anything breaks. The drain can also block and leave water standing in the cabinet. An HRV cleaning visit washes the core and filters, clears the drain and hoods, and finishes with air balancing so supply and exhaust match.

Venmar & vanEE warranty: what to know

  • Venmar's residential spec sheets list a limited lifetime warranty on the heat recovery (HRV) core and a five-year warranty on an energy recovery (ERV) core.
  • The parts term depends on the model: five years on most units, two years on the builder-grade Constructo we checked. The manual for your model number is the authority.
  • Core coverage is conditional on core maintenance being done as the manufacturer recommends, so keep a note of when it was cleaned.
  • These are parts warranties. Labour to diagnose and fit the part is billed.

Parts availability in the GTA

Order by the number on the label, not the name on the door: Venmar, vanEE and Broan versions of one cabinet take the same motor, actuator, capacitor, core and filters. Current-generation parts come through GTA HVAC wholesalers without difficulty, and filters and capacitors are routine; the risk is at the old end. Motors and boards for 1990s cabinets are discontinued one model at a time, and wall controls from one generation do not always work with another. We confirm the part exists before pricing a repair around it.

Common questions

Is a vanEE the same as a Venmar?

For service purposes, yes. Both are made by Venmar Ventilation and many models are the same cabinet with a different label and model name. That is why one technician and one set of parts covers both. It also means a vanEE owner searching for a Venmar part number, or the reverse, is often on the right track as long as the cross-reference is checked.

My Venmar is frozen. Can I thaw it myself?

You can unplug it, open the door, put towels down and let the core thaw at room temperature. Do not use a heat gun on a plastic core. Thawing gets the ice out but not the cause: if the defrost actuator has failed, it will freeze again on the next cold night. Leave it unplugged and book a repair if it ices twice.

Can a new unit reuse my existing ducts and wall control?

The ducts usually stay, with some rework at the cabinet because port positions differ between models. The outdoor hoods are reused if they are in good shape and far enough apart. The wall control is normally replaced with the unit, since controls are matched to a generation. The bathroom timer wiring can typically be kept.

How do I know if my HRV is moving any air?

Go outside to the two hoods. Hold a tissue at each: one should blow it away and the other should pull it in. No movement at either with the unit on high means a failed motor, a frozen core or blocked screens. Movement at one only means a blocked hood or a unit stuck in defrost.

What does Venmar or vanEE repair cost?

The diagnostic is $90–$150 and comes off the repair if you go ahead. We do not publish a flat price for HRV parts because a capacitor and a motor assembly are far apart, and an obsolete part can change the answer entirely. You get a written figure for the repair, and where it makes sense a second one for replacement, before deciding. See how our pricing works.
