Carrier is where modern mechanical air conditioning starts — Willis Carrier's 1902 design for a Brooklyn printing plant was built to control humidity, not temperature — and the company still engineers the furnace, the coil, the condenser and the control as one matched system. When all four pieces are Carrier and commissioned correctly, an Infinity system behaves predictably and stays quiet. When somebody has mixed a Carrier furnace with a third-party coil and a builder's thermostat, it is one of the fussiest things in a basement.
In Oakville we run into Carrier and Bryant constantly through River Oaks and Joshua Creek, where builders specified Performance-tier equipment through the 1990s and 2000s. Those furnaces are now twenty-plus years old, still running, and reaching the point where a control board or an inducer costs a meaningful fraction of a replacement. The Infinity system deserves its own warning. The furnace, outdoor unit and Infinity System Control communicate over four conductors labelled A, B, C and D, and the system will happily report a component fault when the real problem is one corroded conductor in a wall. It is also unforgiving of substitutions: drop a generic thermostat onto an Infinity furnace and you lose modulation, humidity control and most of the diagnostics you paid for. Carrier lines we install and service
The communicating flagship: the 59MN7 modulating condensing furnace, the 24VNA6 variable-speed air conditioner and the Greenspeed Intelligence heat pump, all tied to the Infinity System Control. Full modulation, real dehumidification control in a humid Lake Ontario summer, and staging that follows the weather rather than the thermostat's patience.
Two-stage condensing furnaces such as the 59TP6, matched to two-stage or single-stage condensers. Conventional low-voltage wiring, standard thermostats, most of the comfort benefit and far cheaper parts than the Infinity tier. This is the sensible middle for most detached homes in Halton.
Single-stage condensing furnaces such as the 59SC5, with base-efficiency condensers — the tier builders buy and landlords replace. Simple, cheap to keep running, loud on start-up, and no humidity control beyond running the fan. The upside is that a Comfort-tier board or gas valve costs a fraction of the Infinity equivalent.
Bryant and Payne sit under the same corporate roof and are built on the same platforms with different badging and model numbers. If you have a Bryant Evolution or a Payne furnace, we service it the same way and the parts logic is identical — which is useful, because a Bryant part is sometimes on the shelf when the Carrier-numbered equivalent is not.
What goes wrong on Carrier equipment
Amber status code on the board and no heat
Carrier and Bryant boards blink a two-digit status code that you read as two groups of flashes, and the legend is printed inside the blower door. Condensate backing up through the inducer drain
On the 90%-plus Carrier furnaces the condensate leaves through the inducer housing and a trap, and both scale up. You get a puddle on the floor, a rusted-out inducer or a lockout, sometimes all three. Clearing the drain and replacing the trap runs $150–$350; if the basement has no gravity fall to a drain, a replacement condensate pump is $250–$450.

Infinity AC cools weakly with clean coils and correct charge
On a variable-speed Infinity system this usually points at the metering device or a communication fault limiting compressor output, not at low refrigerant. Adding gas to a system that is not short of it makes the problem worse and costs you money — that is why the first thing we do on a weak-cooling call is measure superheat and subcooling rather than reach for a hose. Carrier warranty: what to know
- Carrier's registration window is 90 days from installation. Registering the serial number inside that window is what upgrades most residential equipment from the base parts term to the enhanced ten-year parts term. Registration is free and takes minutes at Carrier's online warranty registration page.
- Skip registration and you fall back to the base term, which is materially shorter. Carrier does not send a reminder, and the installing contractor is not obliged to do it for you — many do, so ask for confirmation in writing at the end of the job.
- Longer heat exchanger coverage sits on the higher-efficiency furnaces. The condensing lines carry Carrier's longest published heat exchanger term and the lower tiers carry less. The exact term for your model is on the warranty certificate that shipped in the literature packet.
- Labour is separate everywhere. A parts warranty gets you a box; it does not pay a technician. Ask any contractor quoting you a Carrier install what labour coverage they include and for how long, and get it on the quote rather than in conversation.
- Claims can be refused for the predictable reasons: an unlicensed installation, missing or falsified registration details, damage from running the system with a blocked filter, and non-manufacturer parts fitted during an earlier repair.
Parts availability in the GTA
Carrier is the easy end of the parts problem in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Components move through Carrier's own distribution network and its Totaline parts brand, and because Carrier, Bryant and Payne share platforms, a single counter usually covers all three. Igniters, pressure switches, limit switches, inducer motors, gas valves and capacitors for anything built in the last two decades are normally same-day or next-morning. The slow items are Infinity-specific: system controls, communicating blower modules and boards for discontinued Infinity generations can take a few days, which is exactly when it matters that we diagnosed the bus properly and ordered the right thing once. Common questions
Is a Bryant furnace the same as a Carrier?
They come from the same manufacturer and share platforms, so mechanically they are close relatives with different model numbers and trim. A Bryant Evolution system is the Bryant-badged equivalent of Carrier Infinity, right down to the communicating control. In practice it means any technician who knows one knows the other, and it widens the pool of parts that will fit your equipment.
My Infinity thermostat says the furnace is not communicating. Is the board dead?
Usually not. The four-conductor bus between the thermostat, furnace and outdoor unit is the weak point, and a nicked wire behind a staple, a corroded splice at the outdoor unit or a loose terminal will produce exactly that message with healthy equipment at both ends. We meter each leg first. Boards do fail, and a replacement control board runs $500–$1,200 — but we prove it before we sell it.
Can I put a plain thermostat on a Carrier Infinity furnace?
You can make it produce heat, and you will lose most of what you paid for: modulation, staged blower ramps, humidity control and the on-screen fault reporting. If the Infinity control has failed and the budget is tight, we will explain the trade-off honestly rather than pretending a $150 thermostat is a like-for-like swap.
How long should a Carrier furnace last in Ontario?
The same as any well-maintained gas furnace here: figure fifteen to twenty years, with condensing models at the shorter end when the condensate system has been neglected and the secondary heat exchanger has been sitting in acidic water. Do you service Carrier equipment you did not install?
Yes, and most of what we see is exactly that. You do not need to go back to whoever installed the system, and the manufacturer's parts warranty is not affected by which licensed contractor does the work.
