Most homeowners meet Rheem through the water heater. The same manufacturer builds tanks under the Rheem, Ruud and Richmond badges, and between them they account for a large share of the gas tanks sitting in Ontario basements. The heating and cooling side is less famous and quietly good: the condensing furnaces are well built, the diagnostics are sensible, and the EcoNet control platform can tie the furnace, the air conditioner and a compatible water heater into one app. Whether that integration is worth chasing depends on whether you will ever open the app.
One Rheem detail worth knowing before you buy a tank: the Professional series sold through contractors and the retail series sold at big-box stores are not the same equipment despite the shared badge. Component quality, warranty terms and serviceability differ. If you are comparing a contractor's quote against a shelf price, you are usually not comparing the same product, and that is a fair question to ask any installer including us.
In Burlington we see a lot of Rheem through Millcroft and The Orchard, where 1990s subdivisions were built with gas tanks that have now been replaced once or twice. Halton and Hamilton draw from Lake Ontario and the water here is moderately hard, which means sediment at the bottom of a tank is the normal end state, not a defect. A tank that rumbles on recovery is telling you it has a sediment layer boiling underneath the burner, and an annual flush is cheaper than the alternative.

If your tank has a rental sticker on it, stop before you call anyone: the rental company owns that unit, and a third-party repair can put you in breach of the contract. Rheem lines we install and service
The top tier — the R98V modulating condensing furnace, the RA20 variable-speed air conditioner and the RP20 heat pump, all EcoNet-capable. Modulating heat, real staged cooling and app-based fault reporting, at a price step over the Classic Plus tier that is worth it mainly in larger homes.
The R96V and its stablemates: two firing rates, an ECM blower, condensing efficiency, matched to mid-tier condensers. The sensible middle of the Rheem range and where most Halton replacements land — low fire carries October and April, high fire is there for a cold snap, and the electronics are still simple enough to keep in parts.
The R95T and equivalents, paired with base-efficiency air conditioners. Simple, affordable and easy to keep in parts, but noisier than everything above it: with one fixed firing rate you hear the burner arrive every cycle.
The Professional line sold through the trade and the retail line sold off the shelf, in the usual 40, 50 and 60 gallon sizes. A straight tank-for-tank swap installed typically runs $1,200–$2,500 depending on size, venting and whether the gas line and vent need bringing up to current requirements.
Rheem's condensing tankless units and its hybrid heat pump water heaters. A tankless conversion runs $3,500–$6,500 installed including gas-line and venting work, and it is a different maintenance commitment — an annual descale flush is $150–$300 on our hard water.
What goes wrong on Rheem equipment
Water heater will not stay lit — thermocouple or flame sensor
The pilot lights, holds while you press the button, and dies the moment you let go. On a standing-pilot tank that is a failed thermocouple, $150–$300 to replace. On a modern sealed-combustion tank it is more often the flame sensor circuit or a blocked air intake screen at the base of the unit — worth checking before anyone quotes you a new tank.
Pilot lights but the burner never fires — gas control valve
The valve at the front of the tank contains the thermostat and the safety circuit, and when it fails the tank looks alive and produces nothing. Replacement is $400–$600. On a tank past a dozen years, we price the valve against a full replacement at $1,200–$2,500 so you can weigh it honestly rather than paying twice in two years.
Condensate faults on Rheem condensing furnaces
Rheem's high-efficiency furnaces are careful about condensate and will shut down rather than let it back up, which is the right behaviour and a confusing symptom — you get a no-heat call with a furnace that looks perfectly healthy. Clearing the drain, trap and hoses runs $150–$350; a replacement condensate pump is $250–$450. If the basement floor drain is above the furnace outlet, the pump is not optional.
Lukewarm water from an electric tank — a burned-out lower element
You get a short burst of hot water and then tepid, which is the signature of a dead lower element while the upper one still works. Element replacement is $200–$400. On hard water, elements scale and fail early, so we check the anode rod at the same visit — a rod that has dissolved to a bare wire is why the tank rusts through next.
Rheem warranty: what to know
- Rheem writes different rules for different product families, and this trips people up constantly: the terms on your furnace, your air conditioner and your water tank are three separate warranties with three separate certificates, even though they share a badge.
- Heating and cooling equipment: extended parts coverage is conditional on registering the unit shortly after installation. Because the window and the resulting term vary by model and model year, register the same week the job is signed off and confirm the term on Rheem's registration page rather than assuming it matches another brand's.
- Tank water heaters are usually sold in tiers described by their coverage period — the tank and the parts carry different terms within the same unit, and a tank warranty replaces the tank, not the labour, the permit or the water damage in your basement.
- The Professional contractor line and the retail line carry different warranty terms. If you are comparing prices, compare the certificates too; the cheaper unit is sometimes cheaper because it is covered for less time.
- The reliable claim-killers on water heating are a missing or undersized expansion tank, a tank installed without the required drain pan where one is called for, and an anode rod that was never inspected. Keep the install invoice and the annual service records together.
Parts availability in the GTA
Rheem is well supported across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area on all three product lines, which is one of the practical reasons the brand is so common here. Water heater parts are the fastest — thermocouples, gas control valves, elements, thermostats, dip tubes, anode rods and drain valves are stocked at plumbing and HVAC counters alike, and because Ruud and Richmond equipment shares components, a substitute is usually available if the Rheem-numbered box is out. Furnace and condenser consumables are same-day. The slower items are Prestige-tier electronics: EcoNet-capable control boards, modulating gas valves and communicating thermostats are order-in, generally a few business days. Common questions
Is the Rheem water heater at the big-box store the same as the one a contractor installs?
Usually not. Rheem's contractor Professional line and its retail line share a badge but differ in components, warranty terms and how readily a service technician can get parts. Neither is dishonest — they are aimed at different buyers. What matters is that you compare the certificates and the installed scope, not just the sticker, and that whoever fits it is licensed to make the gas and venting connections.
My Rheem tank rumbles and bangs when it heats. Is it dangerous?
It is not usually dangerous, but it is a warning. That sound is water flashing to steam under a layer of sediment on the tank floor, which is what our moderately hard lake water leaves behind. It reduces recovery, wastes gas and overheats the steel above the burner. An annual flush prevents it; on an older tank that has never been flushed, the rumble often arrives shortly before a leak. Can I repair a rented Rheem water heater?
Not through us, and you should not want to. If there is a rental sticker on the tank, the rental company owns the equipment and is contractually responsible for repairing it at no charge to you. Do I need the EcoNet control to run a Rheem furnace?
No. Rheem's Prestige equipment runs on conventional thermostat wiring and delivers its staging without the EcoNet control; what the control adds is remote monitoring, fault alerts on your phone and tighter integration if you have more than one EcoNet-capable appliance. It is a convenience layer. If you would not open the app, spend the money on better sheet metal instead.
Should I replace the furnace and water heater at the same time?
Only if both are actually near the end. When they are, doing them together saves a crew mobilization and one round of venting work, and in a condensing furnace retrofit the venting often has to be revisited anyway. What we will not do is bundle a healthy appliance into a quote to round out the invoice — if the tank has five good years left, it stays.
