Smart thermostat installation takes under an hour when the wall already has a common wire, and longer when it does not — which describes most houses here built before the mid-1990s. Mounting the faceplate is the easy part; the wiring and the equipment configuration behind it are the actual job.
The common wire is where most do-it-yourself installs stall. Older thermostat cable is four conductors — red, white, yellow, green — with nothing left over to power a screen and a Wi-Fi radio continuously. There are three ways out: pull new eighteen-gauge, five- or eight-conductor cable from the furnace to the wall, use the power extender module some manufacturers include at the control board, or fit an add-a-wire adapter. In the open-joist basements of Aldershot and Roseland bungalows a fresh cable drop is usually a twenty-minute pull and the better answer; in a finished basement in Millcroft with a drywalled ceiling, the adapter wins.
Configuration is where installs quietly go wrong. A two-stage furnace wired only to W1 will run on low heat forever and never come up to full fire on the coldest night. A heat pump needs the O/B terminal set correctly for its reversing valve, or it heats when you ask for cooling. A dual-fuel pairing needs a thermostat that can lock the compressor out below a set balance point and hand the load to the furnace, and several popular models cannot do it without an outdoor sensor or a separate control — which thermostats actually suit heat pumps sorts out which ones do, and on a dual-fuel pairing the switchover point is what decides whether the heat pump or the furnace carries a given night.

Two small things save a service call later. Most of these thermostats join 2.4 GHz networks only, so a router broadcasting a single combined band sometimes needs a separate guest network before the thermostat will connect. And a schedule with real setbacks is where the savings live — a device left permanently on hold is just an expensive dial. Book an installer rather than swapping it yourself when
- The thermostat wall has four wires and no common wire landed on the C terminal
- The furnace is two-stage or modulating, or has a variable-speed blower
- You have a heat pump, or a heat pump and a furnace running as a dual-fuel pair
- A humidifier, HRV or zoning panel is wired into the same control
- The existing control is a mercury-bulb model or a proprietary builder unit with unfamiliar terminals
How it works
The make and model of the furnace, AC or heat pump, and a photo of the current thermostat's wiring. That tells us whether you need a cable pull, an adapter or neither.
Power off at the disconnect, terminals landed and verified at the control board, then the equipment type, staging and reversing-valve settings entered in the setup menu — not left on defaults.

Common questions
Do I really need a C-wire?
For nearly every full-featured smart thermostat, yes. Models that power themselves by borrowing current through the heating circuit can cause intermittent faults on some furnace boards — chattering relays or short cycles — which is exactly the kind of problem that gets misdiagnosed as a furnace fault.
Will one work with my heat pump?
Yes, with the right model and the right setup. It has to control auxiliary heat sensibly, or the electric strips or the furnace will fire every time the temperature is nudged up. Getting the switchover point right is the difference between a heat pump that saves money and one that does not.
Can I install it myself?
On a single-stage furnace with a C-wire present, most people can. Where it goes sideways is multi-stage equipment, heat pumps and anything with a humidifier or zone panel — those are the calls we get after a self-install, and the diagnostic is billed like any other.
Is there a rebate?
A qualifying smart thermostat included with an eligible system installation is worth $75 under the Home Renovation Savings Program. Program terms change, so we confirm eligibility when we quote rather than promising it in advance.
Will it lower my heating bill?
The savings come from setbacks you would otherwise forget — overnight, and while the house is empty — plus better staging on multi-stage equipment. Nobody can honestly quote you a number without knowing your schedule and your house, and the benefits of a smart thermostat piece is careful about that.
