Gas Leak Repair

Gas leak repair starts after the house is safe, and the order matters: if you smell gas, leave, then call the Enbridge Gas emergency line at 1-866-763-5427 from outside. Enbridge shuts off or tags what is leaking but does not repair piping or appliances on your side of the meter. That repair is done by a TSSA-licensed gas technician, who finds the leak, fixes it and retests the piping so the gas can be restored.

Reviewed by Zobir, licensed technician

Enbridge owns the service line and the meter. Everything after the meter outlet, the house piping, the shut-offs, the connectors and the appliances, belongs to the homeowner. When an Enbridge technician finds a leak on your side, they close the valve to that appliance or to the whole house, attach a warning tag that says what is wrong, and leave the repair to a licensed contractor. What to do if you smell gas covers the first ten minutes; this page is the job that follows.

Finding the leak is three tools used in sequence. An electronic combustible-gas detector is walked along the piping and around each appliance to narrow the area. Leak-detection solution is then brushed on every joint in that area, and a leak shows as growing bubbles. If the smell comes and goes or nothing shows, the house piping is isolated and put on a gauge for a pressure-drop test, which proves whether the system is tight even when the leak is hidden in a wall.

Leaks cluster at the parts that move, age or sit outdoors. Flexible appliance connectors crack where a range or dryer has been pushed back against them, unions loosen after an appliance is swapped, old plug valves weep at the stem, and flare fittings on older copper runs split. Outside, black iron pipe to a barbecue or pool heater rusts where it meets the ground or where the paint has failed. Leaks inside an appliance are usually at the gas valve or the pilot tubing.

The repair follows one rule: fittings are remade, parts are replaced, and nothing is patched. A leaking union or threaded joint is taken apart, cleaned and remade with sealant rated for gas; a connector, a weeping valve or a corroded length of pipe is replaced with new certified material. A gas valve that leaks through its body is replaced, never repaired. Larger piping changes are priced as gas line installation, and for piping concerns that are not an emergency you can send us the details.

Call a gas technician when

  • You smell gas now: leave the house, call Enbridge Gas from outside, and call us once they have made it safe
  • Enbridge has shut off or tagged an appliance or your house piping and left the repair to you
  • Enbridge has checked a faint smell that comes and goes, and you want the piping pressure-tested
  • A connector is kinked or corroded, or outdoor gas pipe to a barbecue or pool heater is rusted where it meets the ground
  • A shut-off valve will not close fully, or a joint bubbled when it was checked with soapy water

How it works

1. Make safe first

If Enbridge has not been called, that happens first, from outside the house. Once they have shut off or tagged the leak, call our 24/7 line and read us what the tag says, so the technician arrives knowing which appliance or section of pipe is involved.

2. Find, fix and prove

Detector, solution and, where needed, a pressure-drop test locate the leak. You get the finding and the price in writing, then the joint is remade or the part replaced with certified material.

3. Retest and restore

The repaired piping is retested, every appliance is relit and checked, and the tag is cleared so the gas can stay on. Where Enbridge locked the meter, we tell you what they need before they will unlock it.

Common questions

Does Enbridge fix gas leaks?

Only on their own equipment: the service line and the meter. For a leak on house piping or an appliance, Enbridge makes it safe by shutting off the gas to that appliance or to the whole house and leaving a tag that describes the fault. The repair and the retest are done by a licensed gas contractor that you hire.

How do I get the gas turned back on after a leak?

The fault on the tag has to be corrected by a licensed gas technician, the piping retested and the tag cleared. If only an appliance valve was closed, the technician can relight after the repair. If the meter was locked, Enbridge has to come back to unlock it. The steps are in getting gas turned back on after Enbridge shuts it off.

My water heater smells like gas. Repair or replace?

After Enbridge has made it safe, the usual finds are a loose connection at the control valve, a failed connector or the valve itself. A fitting is a minor repair. A gas control valve runs $400–$600, which makes sense on a tank under 8 years old; on an older tank that money goes further toward a $1,200–$2,500 replacement.

Is a small gas leak dangerous if I can barely smell it?

Treat it as one. Natural gas is odourized so that people notice it well below the concentration that can ignite, which means a faint smell is an early warning, not proof that the leak is harmless. Leaks do not seal themselves, and a joint that weeps today can open further when an appliance is moved. Leave, call Enbridge, then have it repaired.

Can I tighten a leaking gas fitting myself?

No. Work on gas piping in Ontario is restricted to certified gas technicians, and tightening a flare or union that is already leaking often makes it worse. Close the appliance shut-off if you can reach it safely, leave the house and call Enbridge. A G2 technician remakes the joint and then proves the system with a gas line pressure test.
