LG Electronics sells four ductless families in Ontario: Art Cool, Mega, LGRED and Multi F. All of them report faults the same way, as a CH code on the indoor unit's display or as a pattern of blinking lights on heads without a numeric display. Write the code down before you cut the power, because it clears when the unit restarts. The planned LG mini-split error codes guide lists what each one means.
The LG equipment we open is generally sound. What fails is the installation around it: a flare joint tightened by feel, a line set that was never pulled into a proper vacuum, a communication cable joined in a damp box. Those faults do not show on day one. They show two or three winters later as a head that blows lukewarm air or a system that stops with a code.
Refrigerant is where Ontario draws a hard line. Anyone handling it must hold an Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) card, and the work belongs to a certified 313A refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic or a 313D residential air conditioning mechanic. A mini-split is a sealed system with a charge measured by weight, so a unit that is low has a leak. Adding refrigerant without finding it means paying again next year and venting the rest to the air; the repair is described on our refrigerant leak repair page.
LG ductless suits the houses here that have no ducts or not enough of them: radiator-heated brick homes, additions, finished attics and the second floors of older two-storeys. If you are buying new, the current Ontario heat pump rebates run through the Home Renovation Savings Program and need approval before the install, so read our rebates page before you sign. ZK Mechanical is independent and services LG without belonging to its dealer network, which means we will also tell you when another brand fits the house better.
LG lines we install and service
LG's design-led wall units, including Art Cool Mirror with its dark glass face and Art Cool Premier at the high-efficiency end. Inside they are ordinary inverter mini-splits and they fault like the others. The panel is the fragile part: it has to come off carefully for a deep clean of the blower wheel.
The plain white single-zone wall mount, and the LG system most often quoted for one room, a garage conversion or a sunroom. It is the simplest LG to diagnose because there is one head, one outdoor unit and one cable between them. When a Mega shows a communication code, the list of suspects is short.
LGRED is LG's cold-climate heating technology, offered on selected single-zone and Multi F outdoor units and rated by LG to keep heating in deep cold. The exact low-temperature limit and the capacity at that temperature are on the submittal sheet for the model, and we size from that sheet, not from the brochure. Cold-climate models add roughly $500–$1,500 per zone over standard ones.
Multi-zone outdoor units that run several indoor heads. Multi F connects the heads directly, and Multi F MAX uses branch distribution boxes for larger zone counts. More zones mean more flare joints and more communication wiring, so a multi-zone LG that was installed in a hurry has more places to leak and more places to lose its signal.
What goes wrong on LG equipment
CH05: indoor and outdoor units have stopped talking
CH05 is a communication error between the indoor and outdoor units, and the cause is wiring, a connection or a board, in that order of likelihood. We start at the cable: a splice inside a wall, a loose or corroded terminal at the outdoor unit, insulation chewed by rodents, or the wrong cable used in the first place. Only when the cable and voltages check out do we condemn a board, which runs $400–$800 replaced. The single-code walkthrough is in LG mini-split error CH05.
CH10: indoor fan motor lock
CH10 means the indoor fan motor is not turning when the board tells it to. The cheap cause is a blower wheel so loaded with dust and mould that it drags, or a wheel rubbing a warped housing. The other causes are a loose motor connector, a failed fan motor at $300–$700 replaced, or the board that drives it. A head that has not had a proper deep cleaning in years is the usual candidate.
CH67: outdoor fan lock
CH67 is the same complaint from the outdoor unit: the fan is blocked or the motor has failed. In winter the blade is often frozen to ice that built up in the base pan when defrost water could not drain, or the unit is buried in drifted snow. Switch the system off, clear loose snow from around the cabinet and never chip at ice near the coil. If the fan still will not run, the motor, its connector or the outdoor board is next, and the unit probably needs a taller stand.
Low refrigerant charge from leaking flare joints
A slow leak at a flare shows as weak heating and cooling, frost on the indoor coil and a head that runs constantly. The cause is nearly always workmanship: a flare made with the wrong tool, left dry, or tightened without a torque wrench. The repair is to recover what is left, remake the joint, pressure-test with nitrogen, pull a deep vacuum measured with a micron gauge and weigh in the factory charge. Leak repair and recharge runs $300–$800+, and more when the leak is in a coil.
LG warranty: what to know
- LG Canada states that registering an air conditioner or heat pump extends the parts warranty from the standard 5 years to 10 years from the date of purchase. Register soon after start-up; the warranty card gives the registration window.
- The compressor has its own term, printed on the warranty card for your model. Check the card instead of assuming it matches the parts term.
- It is a parts warranty. The diagnosis, the refrigerant and the hours to fit the part are yours unless your installer sold you labour coverage in writing.
- Keep the installation invoice and the start-up date. A system bought online and installed without a certified refrigeration mechanic may not qualify, so read the card's conditions before you rely on it.
- If you bought the house with the system already in it, ask the seller for the registration confirmation. Coverage for a later owner is set out in the card.
Parts availability in the GTA
LG ductless parts are ordered by model and serial number through the distributors that carry LG's HVAC line, and few of them sit on a general wholesaler's shelf. Boards, fan motors and thermistors for current Art Cool, Mega and Multi F units are normally obtainable, but most are order-in, so a board failure in a heat wave can mean a few days without that zone. Parts for superseded outdoor units take longer. We photograph both nameplates on the first visit and confirm availability before quoting, and on a single-zone system we will tell you if a temporary heater or window unit is the sensible bridge.

Common questions
Can I clear an LG CH05 code by turning the breaker off and on?
You can try it once. Switch the system off at the breaker or outdoor disconnect, wait a few minutes and restore power. If CH05 was caused by a brief power disturbance it will not return. If the code comes back the same day, the cable, a terminal or a board has a real fault, and repeated power cycling will not fix it.
Why can't you just top up the refrigerant in my LG mini-split?
Because a mini-split does not use up refrigerant. If the charge is low, it leaked, and whatever goes in will leak out the same way. Ontario's refrigerant rules require the leak to be found and repaired, and the charge on an inverter system has to be weighed in accurately for it to run properly. A top-up is the expensive option spread over several visits.
What does an LG mini-split cost installed in the GTA?
Our published bands are $4,000–$7,000 for a single zone, $7,500–$11,000 for a dual-zone system and $10,000–$16,000+ for three to four zones, with cold-climate models adding roughly $500–$1,500 per zone. Line-set length, electrical work and wall or roof routing move the number inside the band. Every quote is written and itemized; our pricing page shows the other bands.
Is an LGRED heat pump enough to heat my house without backup?
It depends on the heat loss of the rooms it serves and the capacity of that model at your design temperature, both of which we calculate before recommending it. In a house that already has radiators or a furnace, keeping that system as backup costs nothing. Our answer on whether ductless heat pumps are good for heating explains the limits.
Will you repair an LG system that another company installed?
Yes. On the first visit we look at the installation as well as the fault: the flare joints, the line-set insulation, the cable between the units, the drain slope and the height of the outdoor stand. If the original work is the cause, you get photos and a written price to correct it, and you decide whether to go back to the installer first.
