Navien Combi Boiler Repair & Service

Navien combi boiler repair is a no-heat call first and a hot-water call second: the NCB-E, NCB-H and NFC combis make both from one wall-hung cabinet, so a single failed part can take out the radiators, the taps or both. If the taps run hot and the house is cold, the 3-way valve is the first suspect; E302 on the display means the heating loop has lost pressure, and E003 means the burner did not light. We service Navien combi and NHB heat-only boilers across Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton and the west GTA, with a $90–$150 diagnostic and the repair priced in writing before a part is ordered.

Tankless combination water heater and boiler

Navien is the North American brand of KD Navien, a South Korean manufacturer, and most people know it for tankless water heaters. This page is about the other half of the catalogue: boilers that heat the house. If your only complaint is hot water from a Navien NPE unit, our Navien tankless repair page is the right one. If the radiators, the in-floor loops or the air handler have gone cold, keep reading.

We see Navien combis in two kinds of homes. In pre-war brick houses in Hamilton and west Toronto, a combi usually replaced a cast-iron boiler and a separate tank, and it feeds the original radiators. In 2000s-and-newer townhouses it often feeds a hydronic air handler instead, so the complaint arrives as cold air from the vents while the showers are still hot.

Three installation errors sit behind a large share of the misbehaving Navien combis we open. The first is piping: Navien's manuals call for primary/secondary piping or a low-loss header so the internal pump only has to move water through the boiler, and a combi piped straight into the zones short-cycles, runs noisy and starves the far radiators. The second is gas: the larger models draw close to 200,000 BTU an hour in hot-water mode, and under CSA B149.1 the line has to be sized for that load plus every other appliance on it. The third is a missing condensate neutralizer, which leaves acidic condensate running into a cast-iron drain or across a concrete floor.

Is it safe to wait? A Navien that has locked out on a code has shut itself down safely, so the risk is the cold, not the boiler. In freezing weather the water-filled pipes in an exposed wall can freeze once the heat is off, so treat no heat in January as urgent and read what to do if your heating pipes or radiators freeze while you wait. ZK Mechanical is an independent, owner-operated contractor: we service Navien, we are not part of its sales network, and nobody here is paid to steer you toward a new one.

Navien lines we install and service

NCB-E combi boilers (NCB-180E, NCB-210E, NCB-240E)

The original Navien combi and the one we repair most, because so many went in through the 2010s. One burner and one main heat exchanger serve both jobs, with a 3-way valve and a brazed plate heat exchanger handling domestic hot water. The age of the fleet matters: plate heat exchangers, 3-way valves and flow sensors on these are now old enough to fail in ordinary service.

NCB-H combi boilers (NCB-190/060H to NCB-250/150H)

The current combi line that replaced the NCB-E, sold as the NCB-190/060H, NCB-210/065H, NCB-240/110H and NCB-250/150H. The layout is familiar, so the faults are too: diverting, pressure, ignition and scale. Because these are newer, more of them are still inside Navien's parts warranty, which changes who pays for the component.

NFC fire-tube combi boilers

The NFC-175 and NFC-200, and the newer NFC-H models, use a fire-tube main heat exchanger instead of the water-tube design in the NCB. They are more forgiving of flow problems in older radiator systems with wide pipes. They still divert between heating and hot water, so a hot-taps-cold-house complaint is diagnosed the same way.

NHB heat-only boilers (NHB-055, NHB-080, NHB-110, NHB-150)

Space heating only: no plate heat exchanger and no domestic hot water unless an indirect tank is piped to it. With fewer parts to fail, an NHB that will not heat usually comes down to loop pressure, ignition, the condensate trap or the system piping around it. If an indirect tank is the problem, the fault is often the tank's sensor or its circulator and not the boiler.

What goes wrong on Navien equipment

Hot taps but cold radiators (or the reverse): the 3-way valve

A motorized 3-way valve decides whether heated boiler water goes out to the heating loop or through the plate heat exchanger that makes domestic hot water. When the valve or its actuator sticks in the hot-water position, showers are fine and the house goes cold; stuck the other way, the radiators heat and the taps run lukewarm. We command the valve and feel the pipes before condemning it, because a dead thermostat, a closed zone valve or an air handler fault produces the same cold house. The repair is a new actuator or valve body and a check of the system water for the debris that jammed it; see why a combi boiler has hot water but no heat for the full list of causes.

E302: low water pressure on the heating loop

E302 means the pressure sensor reads too little water in the heating loop for the boiler to fire. A typical two-storey house sits around 12–15 psi cold; if the gauge has dropped well under that, the water went somewhere. The usual causes are a leak at a radiator valve or fitting, a waterlogged expansion tank that forces the relief valve to dump water every cycle, or a make-up (auto-fill) valve that has stopped feeding. Topping the loop up clears the code for a while, but the real repair is the leak or the expansion tank.

E003: ignition failure

E003 means the boiler tried to light and did not prove flame. The one safe check for a homeowner is outdoors: clear snow or ice from the intake and exhaust terminations, then reset once. If it returns, the causes run from a worn igniter or flame rod and a blocked condensate trap to a gas supply that sags when the furnace or range fires at the same moment. We measure gas pressure with the boiler at high fire and finish with a combustion analyzer, because a Navien that lights on a guess will lock out again on the first cold night.

Tap temperature swings hot and cold: a scaled plate heat exchanger

Hard water in Halton and Hamilton lines the narrow passages of the plate heat exchanger with scale, and the first symptom is a shower that drifts between hot and lukewarm. A descale flush through the service valves runs $150–$300 and restores most units; a plate exchanger that is too far gone is replaced. If the installer left out the service valves, we add them, because a combi that cannot be flushed will scale again. A failing flow sensor gives a similar symptom, which is why we test before we flush.

Navien warranty: what to know

  • Navien publishes the NCB-H residential warranty as 10 years on the heat exchangers, 5 years on parts and 1 year on labour, for single-family homes. Other series and older units carry their own terms, so check Navien's warranty page against your model and serial number.
  • The boiler has to be installed by a properly licensed contractor, and Navien asks for proof of the installation date. Keep the install invoice with the manual; without it a claim is hard to start.
  • Scale is excluded. Navien's terms list hard water deposits and mineral build-up as damage the warranty does not cover, and they also exclude failure to perform regular maintenance. A dated flush record is the cheapest protection you can keep.
  • Navien states there is no warranty on a unit bought over the internet or through a supplier it has not approved. If a price looked too good, find out where the boiler came from before you count on coverage.
  • Coverage is for single-family residential use and stays with the boiler at its original installation address. A unit moved to another house, or one heating a commercial or multi-unit building, is treated differently.

Parts availability in the GTA

Navien is one of the easier boiler brands to get parts for around the GTA. Igniters, flame rods, 3-way valve assemblies, flow sensors, circulators and control boards for the NCB and NHB lines are commonly stocked by the hydronic and plumbing wholesalers our trade uses, so many repairs finish on the first or second visit. Plate heat exchangers and main heat exchangers for early NCB-E units are more often order-in. We confirm the part number from the rating plate and check stock before quoting, so the date we give you is a real one.

Common questions

Is it safe to keep resetting my Navien when it shows E003?

One reset after clearing snow or ice from the outside vent terminations is reasonable. Repeated resets are not. Each failed attempt puts unburned gas through the heat exchanger and soaks the igniter, and the code is telling you something is wrong with gas, air, spark or drainage. If it fails a second time, leave it off and book a visit.

Can I top up the pressure myself when E302 appears?

You can add water through the fill valve to get heat back for the night if you know which valve it is, stopping around 12–15 psi cold. Treat that as a stopgap. Fresh water carries oxygen and minerals into the loop, and a system that needs topping up more than once a season has a leak or a failed expansion tank. Our answer on why a boiler loses pressure covers where to look.

My Navien combi was piped without primary/secondary piping. Is that a problem?

Often, yes. The internal pump in a Navien combi is sized to move water through the boiler, not around a whole house of zones. Without a primary/secondary arrangement or a low-loss header, flow through the heat exchanger depends on which zones happen to be open, and the boiler short-cycles or bangs. Repiping the near-boiler section corrects it, and we quote that in writing after seeing the layout.

Should I repair my older NCB-E or replace it?

Repair it when the fault is a valve, a sensor, an igniter or a plate heat exchanger and the main heat exchanger is dry and clean. Replace it when the main heat exchanger is leaking, or when the repair comes to more than half the cost of a new combi on a boiler over 12 years old. We price both so you can compare; see combi boiler installation.

How often should a Navien combi boiler be serviced?

Once a year, before the heating season. A proper visit cleans the condensate trap and the intake filter, checks the igniter and flame rod, tests the expansion tank charge, flushes the domestic side where the water is hard and ends with a combustion analysis. Skipping it does not break the boiler overnight, but scale and a dirty trap are behind most of the lockouts we attend.
