Furnace Humidifier Repair & Service

Furnace humidifier repair and service usually comes down to one of four parts: a scaled evaporator pad, a plugged orifice, a stuck solenoid valve or a humidistat the furnace never calls. The diagnostic visit is $90–$150 and a new pad runs about $20–$40; once a repair quote passes half the $500–$900 cost of a new bypass unit, replacing it is the better spend. If the unit is dripping into the furnace cabinet, close its water valve now and call.

A furnace-mounted humidifier is a simple machine. A 24-volt solenoid valve opens when the humidistat asks for moisture and the furnace is heating, water runs through a feed tube and a pinhole orifice to a tray above the evaporator pad, warm air passes through the wet pad, and whatever does not evaporate leaves by the drain line. On a bypass model a short duct and damper borrow air between the supply and return plenums; a powered model adds its own fan motor.

Hard water does most of the damage in Halton and Hamilton. Minerals left behind as the water evaporates crust the pad until air cannot pass through it, and the same scale closes the orifice, which is a hole about the size of a pin. Houses on private wells in Kilbride, Carlisle and rural Flamborough usually scale faster than houses on town water drawn from Lake Ontario, so a pad that lasts a full winter in one house can be finished by midwinter in another.

The other common faults are upstream and electrical. The self-piercing saddle valve that feeds many humidifiers clogs at its needle, so the tube stays dry even with a good solenoid; we replace it with a proper quarter-turn shutoff. A humidistat can be healthy and still never get a call when the wire to the furnace's humidifier terminal was never landed, or was left off after a furnace replacement (why a furnace humidifier stops working covers the homeowner checks).

A humidifier that never kept up is a different job from one that broke. If the house has moved to a heat pump, or it is too large or too tight for an evaporative unit to hold 35%, the fix is a different humidifier, and humidifier installation covers the options. Everything else on this list is a small indoor air quality repair, and most are finished in a single visit.

Book a humidifier repair when

  • Water is dripping from the humidifier housing or pooling inside the furnace cabinet below it
  • The pad is bone dry while the furnace runs, or crusted white and stiff with scale
  • You hear water trickling to the drain when the furnace is off: a solenoid valve stuck open
  • Indoor humidity sits under 25% in January with the humidistat turned up
  • Windows stream with condensation because the humidistat no longer shuts the water off

How it works

1. Shut the water, then call

If it is leaking, close the saddle valve or shutoff on the small copper or plastic line feeding the humidifier and turn the humidistat to off. Tell us the make, whether it has a fan, and where the water is showing up.

2. Test each part in order

The technician checks for 24 volts at the solenoid with the furnace heating, water at the valve inlet, flow through the orifice and a clear drain, then reads the humidistat against a hygrometer. You get the fault and the price in writing before parts are changed.

3. Repair, re-pad and set up

The failed part is replaced, a new pad goes in, the feed and drain are watched for drips through a full heating cycle, and the bypass damper is set for the season. If the unit is not worth fixing you get a replacement quote instead, or you can ask for a callback.

Brands: We service Aprilaire and other flow-through furnace humidifiers, bypass and fan-powered, and replace obsolete drum-style units.

Common questions

Is a leaking furnace humidifier an emergency?

It is not a safety emergency, but it should not wait. Water running down inside the furnace cabinet reaches the control board, the blower and the heat exchanger, and rust or a shorted board costs far more than the humidifier did. Close the humidifier's water valve, leave the furnace running for heat, and book the repair. Why a furnace humidifier leaks lists the usual sources.

How often should the humidifier pad be changed?

Once a year, in the fall, before the heating season; twice on very hard water. A scaled pad evaporates little, sheds water off its edges instead of through its face, and is the usual start of a drip into the furnace. The pad itself is about $20–$40, and changing it is a five-minute job most homeowners can do once they have been shown.

Should I repair or replace an old humidifier?

Repair a flow-through unit with a sound housing: valves, pads, orifices and humidistats are all replaceable. Replace it when the plastic housing is cracked or warped, when it is a drum-style unit with a standing water tray, or when the quote passes half the $500–$900 price of a new bypass humidifier installed. Drum units grow slime in the tray and their parts are hard to find. Current bands are on the pricing page.

Why does my humidifier run water down the drain?

A flow-through humidifier is meant to send some water to the drain while it runs; that flow carries minerals away from the pad. It should stop when the furnace stops. Water moving with the furnace off means the solenoid valve is stuck open with scale or debris, and it wastes water around the clock until the valve is replaced.

What should the bypass damper be set to?

Open in winter, closed in summer. Left open during cooling season, the bypass duct lets cooled supply air loop straight back to the return, which costs air conditioning capacity. Left closed in winter, no air crosses the pad and the humidifier does nothing even with water flowing. It is worth marking the handle with both positions so the spring and fall change is not forgotten.
