Steam Humidifier Installation

Steam humidifier installation costs $1,500–$3,000 and suits three kinds of house: heat-pump homes, where supply air is too cool for an evaporative pad to do much; large homes; and tight homes with an HRV, where a bypass unit cannot reach the setpoint. A steam unit boils water electrically and injects the vapour into the supply duct, so its output does not depend on furnace heat. It needs a dedicated electrical circuit, a water line and a drain.

A bypass or fan-powered humidifier evaporates water off a wet pad using the heat in the supply air, and its rated output assumes furnace-temperature air. A heat pump delivers air much cooler than a gas furnace's and runs long, gentle cycles, so the same pad gives up a fraction of its rated moisture. That is why a house that held 35% humidity on gas can sit in the low 20s the first winter after a heat pump installation. Steam does not care what the supply air temperature is.

The unit hangs on a wall or on the duct near the furnace or air handler, and it is the highest-output humidifier we fit in our indoor air quality work. Inside, either electrodes pass current through the water in a replaceable canister, or a heating element boils water in a tank that gets cleaned. Steam travels through a hose to a dispersion tube in the supply duct, and the humidifier's control runs the blower whenever it is making steam, so it can add moisture even with no call for heat.

Three connections decide whether a house is ready for one. The electrical supply is a dedicated circuit, 120 or 240 volts depending on the model; higher output generally means 240 volts, and the circuit is installed by a licensed electrical contractor under an ESA notification. The water supply is a cold line with its own shutoff. The drain has to accept periodic flushes of hot water, so it runs in material rated for the temperature to a floor drain or a suitable pump.

Water hardness sets the maintenance. On Halton and Hamilton municipal water an electrode canister typically lasts a heating season; on a hard private well in Carlisle or Campbellville it can be spent sooner, and reverse-osmosis water can be too pure for an electrode unit to conduct at all. We check the water before choosing the type. The comparison of all three humidifier styles lives in bypass vs fan-powered vs steam.

A steam humidifier is the right call when

  • The house is heated by a heat pump, or by a hybrid system that runs the heat pump most of the winter
  • A bypass or fan-powered unit runs constantly and the house still cannot get past 25–30% in cold weather
  • The home is large, has high ceilings, or runs an HRV continuously
  • Hardwood floors are gapping, or a piano or stringed instruments will not hold tune through winter
  • There is no practical spot for a bypass duct between the supply and return plenums

How it works

1. Size the load and check the three services

We work out the moisture load from the house's volume, tightness and ventilation rate, then confirm panel capacity for the circuit, a water source and a drain route. Water hardness is tested to pick between canister and cleanable-tank designs.

2. Mount, pipe and wire

The unit is mounted, the dispersion tube set in a straight section of supply duct with enough run for the steam to absorb, and water, drain and control wiring connected. The dedicated circuit is completed by the electrician, and most installations take a day.

3. Commission and set the control

The unit is run to full output while we check the duct downstream for wetting, then the humidistat and its outdoor sensor are set so the target drops as the weather gets colder. You are shown how to change the canister or clean the tank; request a quote.

Common questions

Does a steam humidifier use a lot of electricity?

More than an evaporative unit, because boiling water takes energy that a bypass humidifier borrows from the furnace. What it uses depends on how dry and how large the house is; a tight house needs far less steam than a leaky one. The control only calls for steam when humidity is under the setpoint, so air sealing and a sensible setpoint are what keep the running cost down.

How often is the steam canister replaced?

Plan on once a heating season for an electrode canister on local municipal water, and expect a shorter interval on hard well water. The unit signals when the canister is spent: minerals coat the electrodes until it cannot draw enough current. Cleanable-tank models need descaling instead, on a similar schedule. Skipping it does not harm the house; the output just falls away.

Can a steam humidifier over-humidify the house?

Yes, and that is the main thing that goes wrong. Steam units have enough capacity to push humidity past what cold windows and wall cavities tolerate, which shows up as condensation and, over time, mould. An automatic control with an outdoor sensor prevents it by lowering the target in cold snaps. Our guide to ideal indoor humidity in an Ontario winter gives the numbers.

I have a gas furnace. Do I need steam?

Usually not. A gas furnace makes hot supply air, and a bypass unit at $500–$900 installed keeps most average-sized homes comfortable. Steam earns its higher price in big or tight houses and with heat pumps. If you are unsure, start at the humidifier installation page, which covers all three types and how we choose between them.

Can a steam unit go in a house with no ducts?

Ducted steam units are designed to disperse into moving air in a supply duct. Homes heated by radiators or ductless heads need a model with a fan-powered dispersion box that releases steam directly into a room or hallway, and fewer models offer one. We will tell you on the site visit whether your layout suits it or whether room humidifiers are the realistic option.
