HVAC UV Light Bulb Replacement

HVAC UV light bulb replacement is done by hours, not by whether the lamp still glows: a UV-C lamp keeps its blue light long after its germicidal output has faded, so most are changed every one to two years on the manufacturer's schedule. The lamp has to match the unit's model, and a new lamp that will not strike points to the ballast instead. Switch the power off before the duct is opened, because UV-C burns eyes and skin.

A duct-mounted UV light is a low-pressure mercury lamp on a ballast, pushed through a hole in the plenum so it shines on the cooling coil or across the airstream. Its useful output is ultraviolet you cannot see. The blue glow at the sight glass is a by-product, and it stays bright while the UV-C output falls with every hour of run time. A lamp installed four years ago and never changed is doing little more than glowing.

Replacement lamps are not interchangeable. Length, wattage, base and pin layout differ by make and model, and a lamp of the wrong length either will not seat or sits where it misses the coil. Most units take a lamp that makes no ozone, while some older air-treatment models used an ozone-producing one; we fit the type the unit was built for and tell you if yours is an ozone-producing design worth retiring.

The other part that fails is the ballast or power supply. The signs are a new lamp that stays dark, a lamp that flickers or blackens at the ends within weeks, or a status light showing a fault. The visit also covers what UV does to its surroundings: a lamp in line of sight of flex duct liner, a plastic drain pan, wire insulation or a filter embrittles them over time, and a shield or a move fixes that. A coil already coated in growth needs AC coil cleaning first, since the lamp only keeps a clean coil clean.

What a UV light can and cannot do is a separate question, answered in do UV lights in HVAC systems work. This page is for the owner who already has one and wants it kept working. It is one of the smaller jobs in our indoor air quality work, and it fits easily into a furnace or AC tune-up visit.

Replace the lamp or have the unit checked when

  • The lamp has passed the hours or months on its label, glowing or not
  • The unit's lamp-life indicator has changed colour, is flashing, or beeps
  • There is no glow at the sight glass, or a flicker that comes and goes
  • The glass is clouded, or blackened at the ends
  • Slime or a musty smell has returned to the cooling coil and drain pan the light was installed to keep clean

How it works

1. Send the model number

It is on the label of the power supply housing on the outside of the duct. With it we confirm the exact lamp, and whether the manufacturer still supplies it.

2. Power off, swap and clean

The unit is unplugged or switched off before the lamp is drawn out of the duct. The new lamp is handled with gloves, since skin oil on the glass shortens its life, the quartz is wiped clean, and the seal at the plenum is checked.

3. Test and reset

With the duct closed, the lamp is struck and confirmed through the sight glass, the ballast is tested if there was a fault, and the lamp-life timer is reset. The date goes on the housing so the next change is not a guess; book a lamp change.

Common questions

How often should an HVAC UV bulb be replaced?

Follow the hours on the lamp's label. Many are rated for roughly a year of continuous running, and some long-life lamps for two. Lamps that only run with the blower last longer on the calendar but are worn by frequent starts. If you do not know the install date and the lamp has been in since you bought the house, assume it is due.

Can I replace the UV bulb myself?

On many models, yes, if you can identify the exact lamp. Turn off or unplug the unit first and never look at a lit lamp outside the duct: direct UV-C causes a painful eye burn much like welder's flash, and it reddens skin. Handle the glass with gloves and reset the timer afterwards. Call if the new lamp does not light.

The new bulb does not light. What now?

Check that the lamp is fully seated and that any door or safety switch is closed, since many units cut power when the lamp is withdrawn. If it still stays dark, the ballast or power supply has likely failed. On an older unit a ballast plus a lamp can approach the cost of a new light, and that is the point to compare against a new air purification unit.

Is the old bulb hazardous waste?

Yes. UV lamps contain a small amount of mercury, like fluorescent tubes. Do not put one in household garbage or recycling. Keep it in the new lamp's sleeve and take it to your municipal household hazardous waste depot or a retailer that accepts fluorescent lamps. If one breaks, air out the room and sweep up the pieces with stiff paper; do not vacuum them.

Does the UV light replace my furnace filter?

No. A UV lamp does nothing to dust, pet hair or pollen; those are the filter's job, and a dusty lamp works worse because the film on the glass blocks the light. Keep changing the filter on schedule. For particle problems the upgrade is filtration, and our media filter and electronic air cleaner comparison explains the choices.
