Quick answer
Vents whistle when air is forced through an opening that is too small for it. The most common causes are a clogged or overly restrictive furnace filter, a return grille with too little open area, a register or damper that is only partly open, and a gap at the filter door. Start by replacing the filter and opening every register; if the whistle stays, the system needs more return air.
Why are my vents whistling? Because somewhere in the system air is being pushed through a gap at high velocity, and a gap at high velocity makes a whistle the same way a bottle top does. The blower is trying to move a fixed amount of air; when the path is too small, the air speeds up at the restriction and the noise tells you exactly where to look.
Find the whistle by where it comes from
- At the return grille (the big one in the hall or wall): the return is undersized or the filter behind it is loaded. This is the commonest whistle in 1970s–80s houses in Tyandaga, Brant Hills and Glen Abbey with one central return.
- At the furnace cabinet: the filter door does not seal, or the filter is a hair too small and air is screaming around its edge.
- At a supply register: the louvers are set half-open, or the balancing damper in the basement is nearly closed and the air is squeezing past its blade.
- Only while cooling: the blower runs faster for AC than for heat on many furnaces, and a return that is marginal in winter becomes a whistle in July.
- New since a furnace replacement: a high-efficiency ECM furnace can move more air than 40-year-old ducts were built for.
The filter is the first thing to change
A dirty filter, or a high-MERV filter in a slot made for a thin one, is the most restrictive point in most systems. Air pulled hard against it finds the gaps around the frame and the filter door, and that is the whistle. Swap in a fresh MERV 8 pleat and see whether the noise drops — if it does, the cause was restriction, and the longer-term fix is a media cabinet or more return area, not a return to fibreglass. Registers, dampers and closed-off rooms
Every register someone closes raises the pressure on the rest. A house where three bedroom registers are shut for the winter often whistles at the two nearest the furnace, because the same air is now exiting through fewer openings. Open them all, then rebalance at the basement dampers if some rooms overheat; closing vents in unused rooms causes more problems than it solves.
A register whistle that stays when the louvers are wide open usually means a damper blade a few degrees from closed at the takeoff, or a cheap stamped register with narrow slots. Swap the register for one with more free area, and the whistle goes with it.
When the ducts themselves are too small
Some whistles are structural. Many post-war and 1970s houses were built with a single return per floor and a grille a fraction of the size the blower wants; the furnace has been starving quietly for decades and a new, stronger blower made it audible. A technician measures total external static pressure — most furnaces are rated for about 0.5 inches of water column — and if the return side is eating most of it, the fix is adding a second return, enlarging the grille, or replacing a panned joist return with a proper duct.
A whistle that comes from inside a wall or the basement ceiling rather than from a grille is often a duct seam or a loose boot leaking under pressure. That one is a duct sealing job, and sealing it also stops the dust and heat you were losing into the joist bay.
