Work from the room back to the furnace: open the register fully, find the balancing damper on that branch in the basement and open it, then check the run for crushed flex duct, a disconnected boot or too many elbows. Make sure the room has a return path under the door. If it still starves after that, the branch needs upsizing, a second run or its own ductless head.
How do I improve airflow to one room? Start by proving where the air is being lost, because the fix for a closed damper costs nothing and the fix for an undersized branch costs a morning of sheet-metal work. A room at the end of the system gets whatever is left after every closer register takes its share, and in many 1980s–2000s two-storey houses in Millcroft, the Orchard, River Oaks and Joshua Creek, the bonus room over the garage or the far bedroom is the one that loses.
Step one: the register, the damper and the filter
- Open the register louvers all the way and make sure furniture or a rug is not sitting on it — a bed over a floor register cuts it to nothing.
- Go to the basement and trace the round branch duct that feeds that room back to the trunk. Near the takeoff there is usually a small handle or wing nut on a rod: that is the balancing damper. Parallel to the duct is open; across it is closed. Renovators and previous owners close these and forget.
- Replace the furnace filter. A loaded filter starves the farthest rooms first; see whether a filter can be too restrictive.
- Hold a tissue at the register with the fan on. Weak but steady flow means a restriction; no flow at all often means a disconnected duct.
Step two: the run itself
Round branch ducts in the basement are usually 5 or 6 inches; each elbow, each metre of length and each section of sagging flex duct adds resistance, and a 5-inch run with four elbows to a second-floor corner room was never going to deliver. Common finds on a service call: a boot that fell off the duct inside a joist bay and has been heating the floor cavity for years; flex duct crushed flat where a plumber or electrician squeezed past it; a run tapped off the far end of the trunk where little pressure is left.
Additions are their own case. A family room added onto a 1950s Aldershot bungalow was usually fed by extending the existing trunk, which was sized for the original house. Those rooms need a properly sized branch from closer to the furnace, or their own heat source.
Step three: the return path
Air can only enter a room as fast as it can leave it. A bedroom with the door closed and a 6 mm gap underneath pressurizes within seconds and the supply register goes quiet. Trim the door to leave about 20 mm of clearance, or add a transfer grille or jumper duct above the door; rooms with their own return grille rarely have this problem at all.
Step four: rebalancing, boosters and bigger changes
- Rebalance the whole system: partially close the dampers on the rooms nearest the furnace so pressure reaches the far ones. This is what the dampers are for — not the registers, and never fully; see whether to close vents in unused rooms.
- An in-line duct booster fan, wired to run with the blower, adds a modest push on a run that is only slightly short. It cannot fix a crushed or undersized duct, and it adds a small motor noise.
- Upsize the branch from 5 to 6 inches, or add a second run to the room from nearer the trunk — the most reliable fix for a chronically starved room, and a normal part of ductwork modification.
- Zoning dampers with a second thermostat, for a whole floor rather than a single room.
- A single-zone ductless head ($4,000–$7,000 installed) for a room with no realistic duct route — a third-floor loft or a room over a detached garage. See whether a ductless mini-split is worth it.
