Duct Cleaning in Hamilton

Duct cleaning in Hamilton costs $300–$700 for a typical house and $700–$1,000 for a large one, and the price quoted on the phone is the price at the door. It is worth doing after a renovation, when you buy a house with no service history, or after rodents or water got into the ducts. If none of those apply, you probably do not need it yet, and we will tell you that on the call.

When duct cleaning is worth paying for in a Hamilton house

Duct systems across Hamilton are older and odder than most, which is why a flat per-house routine does not work here. In the lower city, many pre-war brick houses were built for a gravity furnace or for radiators, and the ducts were added or reworked decades later. That leaves wide old round pipes, floor registers cut into hardwood, and returns that are simply joist bays closed in with sheet metal. Those panned returns collect the most debris in the house, and they are the part a quick cleaning skips.

Mountain bungalows from the 1950s to the 70s are the simplest job: one trunk down the middle of the basement and short branches off it. A small bungalow with up to about 10 vents is $300–$450, and a house with 10 to 20 vents is $400–$700. The storey-and-a-half wartime houses are trickier, because the upstairs branches run through the knee walls and cannot be reached from the basement trunk alone. Newer homes in Binbrook, Waterdown and upper Stoney Creek have the opposite problem: tidy layouts, but drywall dust and offcuts left in the trunks by the builder, and flexible branch ducts that tear if they are brushed like sheet steel.

Renovation is the strongest reason to book in the older neighbourhoods. Taking down plaster and lath in a Kirkendall or Crown Point house releases a fine, heavy dust that settles in the returns and comes back out of the registers for months. Cover the registers during demolition and clean once the sanding is finished, not before. Houses near the industrial bayfront often show a darker dust at the registers, and for those a better filter at the furnace does more than repeated cleaning.

One thing stops a job: asbestos. Some pre-war and mid-century houses have asbestos paper or tape on duct joints and register boots, and it must not be brushed or vacuumed. If we see it, we stop, show you, and leave that section alone until an abatement contractor has dealt with it. The duct cleaning page explains the negative-pressure method, how to spot duct cleaning scams covers the door-knocker offers, and you can get a quote by phone or online.

Duct Cleaning in Hamilton — FAQs

How much does duct cleaning cost in Hamilton?

By house size: a townhouse or small bungalow with up to about 10 vents is $300–$450; a typical detached house with 10 to 20 vents is $400–$700; a large home with 20 or more vents or two systems is $700–$1,000. Dryer vent cleaning adds $100–$200. Be wary of $99–$150 phone offers, which are priced to get a salesperson into the house. Duct cleaning costs in the GTA has more detail.

My Hamilton house is over 80 years old. Can the ducts still be cleaned?

Usually, yes. Old galvanized ducts are sturdy and clean well. What changes is the inspection beforehand: we look for asbestos tape on the joints, for returns built from panned joists, and for sections that have come apart inside walls. A disconnected or crushed run is a duct repair, and cleaning it without fixing it only moves dust into the wall cavity.

Should I clean the ducts after buying a house on the Mountain?

If the seller cannot say when it was last done, it is a reasonable one-time job. Pull a floor register and look with a flashlight first: a thin grey film is normal, while lint mats, pet hair, construction debris or droppings are a reason to book. If the basement was finished by a previous owner, the drywall dust from that work is often still sitting in the trunk.

Will duct cleaning fix the dust in a house near the industrial area?

Only partly. Cleaning removes what has settled, but outdoor dust keeps arriving through open windows, doors and leaks in the return ducts. A 4-inch media filter cabinet at $400–$700 catches fine particles on every furnace cycle, and sealing return leaks stops the system pulling in basement air. We look at the filter slot and the return before recommending a cleaning.

How long does it take, and what should I do before you arrive?

Two to four hours for a single-system house. Clear furniture and rugs off the floor registers, make sure the furnace and both sides of the main trunk are reachable, and keep a path free near the door for the vacuum hose from the truck. On narrow lower-city streets, tell us where the truck can park, since the hose has to reach the furnace.
