Gas Line Installation · Hamilton, OntarioGas Line Installation in Hamilton
Gas line installation in Hamilton is licensed work: a TSSA-certified gas technician totals the BTU load, sizes the pipe to CSA B149.1, pressure-tests the run and certifies it before any appliance is lit. Barbecue, range and garage runs are priced in writing after a site visit, because the length, the route and the total load set the price. Upsizing an undersized run for a tankless water heater adds $400–$1,200.
Gas lines for ranges, barbecues, garages and generators across Hamilton
What the job looks like depends on which Hamilton you live in. In the pre-war brick of the lower city, the gas piping is threaded black iron that has been added to for decades, often feeding a boiler and a water heater from a main that was never sized for a range or a barbecue on top. On the Mountain, the 1950s–70s bungalows were piped for a furnace and a tank and nothing more. In the newer subdivisions of Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Waterdown and Binbrook the question is simpler: is there a capped stub the builder left, and can the existing line carry one more appliance?
The decision rule is the same in every one of those houses: add up every connected appliance in BTUs, measure the longest run from the meter, and size each section of pipe for the load it carries. If the total is more than the meter can deliver, the meter upgrade is arranged with Enbridge Gas before we run any pipe. Skipping that step is how a house ends up with a furnace that starves on the coldest night because the new range and garage heater pull from the same half-inch branch. Old piping gets looked at too: a seized shutoff, a corroded union or an uncapped drop left behind by a removed appliance is fixed while the system is open.
The paperwork is split between two bodies. The gas piping itself falls under the gas code and is certified by the TSSA-licensed technician who installs it, not by a City of Hamilton building permit. The City's Building Division comes in when the job touches the building, such as a new vent through a wall for a garage heater, and we pull that permit when it applies. Our answer on whether a gas line needs a permit in Ontario explains the split.
Rural Hamilton is its own case: in the parts of rural Flamborough where natural gas mains do not reach, the house runs on propane, and a propane line to a range, a furnace or a standby generator is the same licensed work with different pressures and orifices. A buried run to a detached garage or a pool heater needs utility locates before anyone digs, pipe rated for burial, and a shutoff at the building it feeds. The service itself is described on our gas line installation page, and what gas line installation costs covers what drives the price. Send us the appliance list and a photo of the meter to book the site visit; the Hamilton service area page lists the rest of our work in the city.

Gas Line Installation in Hamilton — FAQs
How much does gas line installation cost in Hamilton?
Three things set the price: the length of the run from the meter, what the pipe passes through (an open Mountain bungalow basement is quicker than a finished lower-city one with plaster ceilings), and whether the existing main can carry the added load. The one published band is upsizing a run for a tankless water heater, at $400–$1,200. Everything else is quoted in writing after a site visit, and our pricing page lists the published figures.
Can you add a gas range to an older Hamilton house heated by a boiler?
Usually, yes. The boiler and water heater are already on the gas main, so the work is confirming that main can carry a range as well, then running a new branch to the kitchen with its own shutoff behind the stove. In a pre-war house the route matters most: we look for a path through the basement ceiling that avoids cutting plaster. If the main is undersized, part of it is replaced in a larger diameter.
My property in rural Flamborough is on propane. Can you still run a line for a generator or a range?
Yes. Propane piping is fuel-gas work under the same code and needs the same licensed technician, load calculation and pressure test. The differences are the regulators at the tank and the house, and appliance orifices sized for propane instead of natural gas. A standby generator is a large load that runs at the same time as the furnace, so the line and regulators are sized for both together, not for the generator alone.
Is there already a gas stub for a barbecue or range in my newer Stoney Creek or Binbrook home?
Sometimes. Builders occasionally leave a capped tee near the furnace or a stub at the kitchen or back wall, and it is worth looking before you assume a full run is needed. A stub is not proof the line behind it is large enough, though. We check the pipe size against the total load and pressure-test the section before a barbecue quick-connect or a range goes on it.
Will the gas be off during the work, and how long does a gas line installation take?
The gas to the house is shut off while we tie in the new branch and while the piping is held under test pressure. Once the test passes, every appliance is relit and checked before we leave. A single run to a barbecue or range through an open basement is normally finished in one visit. Buried runs and meter upgrades take longer to schedule, because the locates and the Enbridge Gas appointment come first.
