Gas Line Installation · Burlington, OntarioGas Line Installation in Burlington
Gas line installation in Burlington is licensed work under Ontario's gas code, CSA B149.1: a TSSA-licensed gas technician sizes the pipe, pressure-tests it and certifies it. The price is set by the length of the run, the route through the house and whether your Enbridge Gas meter can carry the added load, so barbecue, range and garage lines are quoted in writing after a site visit. Upsizing an undersized run for a tankless water heater costs $400–$1,200. If you smell gas right now, leave the house and call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside before you call anyone about a quote.
Running a New Gas Line in a Burlington Home: Sizing, Meter and Sign-Off
The age of the house tells us most of what we will find. The 1950s–60s bungalows and side-splits in Roseland, Shoreacres, Elizabeth Gardens and Aldershot were piped for a furnace and a tank water heater, usually in threaded black iron along the basement joists, with little capacity left over. Add a barbecue, a range and a garage heater to that system without redoing the arithmetic and the furnace starves on the first cold night. So before any pipe goes in we total every appliance's BTU input, measure the developed length of each run, and size from the code tables.
Newer subdivisions bring a different problem: access. In Millcroft, the Orchard and Alton Village the basement ceiling is often drywalled, so the route from the meter to the back deck or the kitchen decides the cost more than the distance does. Corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) threads through finished joist bays with fewer openings than rigid pipe, and it has to be bonded to the electrical ground, the step unlicensed installers skip. Look along the rear basement wall before you call, because builders sometimes leave a capped stub for a future barbecue or range, and that shortens the job.
Rural north Burlington is a separate case. Many lots around Lowville and Kilbride have no gas main at the road, so a new line there is propane piping from a tank your supplier owns to the appliance. It is the same licensed work and the same pressure test, but every appliance on it has to be set up for propane, and a natural-gas barbecue cannot be connected without the manufacturer's conversion kit. Where a gas main does reach the road, Enbridge Gas brings the service to the meter and we pipe everything after it.
On the paperwork, the utility owns the service line and the meter, and you own the piping downstream of it. When the added load exceeds what the meter can deliver, the meter change is arranged with Enbridge Gas before we start. The gas work itself is certified by the technician under the gas code; the City of Burlington Building Department comes into it only when the job changes the building, such as a new vent through the wall for a garage heater, as whether a gas line needs a permit in Ontario explains. Sizing and materials are covered on our gas line installation page, price drivers in what gas line installation costs, and everything else we do nearby on the Burlington service area page; for a quote, send us the layout.

Gas Line Installation in Burlington — FAQs
What does a barbecue or range gas line cost in Burlington?
No flat rate would be honest, because the run length, the route through finished space and the total connected load move the price more than the appliance does. A short run across an open basement ceiling costs far less than a line fished through a finished basement to a deck at the far corner. The one published band is $400–$1,200 to upsize an existing run for a tankless heater. Everything else is quoted in writing after a site visit.
Can my existing meter handle a barbecue, a range and a garage heater?
Add up the BTU input on each appliance's rating plate, including the furnace and the water heater, and compare the total with the capacity marked on the meter. Houses from the 1950s to the 1980s that have gained appliances over the years are the ones that come up short. If the total is over, the meter upgrade is requested from Enbridge Gas first, and the new piping is sized for the full load.
There is no gas main on my road in Kilbride. Can you still run a line?
Yes, as propane. The supplier sets the tank, and we run the piping from there to the furnace, range, barbecue or generator, test it and certify it. Each appliance must be configured for propane with the manufacturer's parts. If you are choosing new equipment, name the fuel when you order, because converting an appliance afterward costs more than ordering it right the first time.
Do I need a City of Burlington permit for a gas line?
Not for the gas piping itself, which is certified under CSA B149.1 by the licensed technician who installs it. A municipal permit comes in when the job also alters the building: a new vent penetration for a garage heater or a structural opening, for example. Keep the certification with your house documents, because an insurer or a buyer's home inspector may ask who did the work.
Does a tankless water heater need a bigger gas line?
Usually, in the older half of the city. A tankless unit burns much more gas at once than the tank it replaces, and the half-inch branch that fed a tank in a 1960s bungalow often cannot deliver it. Upsizing that run adds $400–$1,200 to the conversion. Our tankless water heater page for Burlington covers the venting, the water side and the full installed price.
