Should I close vents in unused rooms?

Quick answer

No — closing vents in unused rooms does not save energy in a forced-air system and often costs it. The furnace and blower still produce the same heat and airflow; shutting registers raises pressure in the ducts, pushes more air out through leaks, can trip the high limit or freeze the AC coil, and makes an ECM blower draw more power. Set back the thermostat instead.

Should I close vents in unused rooms? Closing a register feels like turning off a light in an empty room, but a furnace does not work like a lamp. The burner produces the same heat and the blower moves the same air regardless of how many registers are open; all you change is where the air is forced to go and how hard the blower works to get it there. The result, in most houses, is higher bills and a more stressed system.

What actually happens when you close registers

  • Static pressure in the ducts rises, because the same volume is leaving through fewer openings.
  • Duct leaks — and most 1970s–90s subdivisions have unsealed joints in the joist bays — leak more under higher pressure, so more of your heated air ends up in the basement ceiling.
  • A PSC blower moves less air, so the heat exchanger runs hotter and the furnace can start tripping its high limit and short-cycling.
  • An ECM (variable-speed) blower holds its airflow by drawing more electricity — you pay Burlington Hydro or Oakville Hydro to fight your own closed registers.
  • In summer, reduced airflow across the AC coil drops its temperature until it ices over, and the thaw shows up as water beside the furnace.
  • When Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory studied register closing in houses with typical duct leakage, it usually raised energy use rather than lowering it.

The cold-room problem

A closed-off room in a Burlington January does not just get cool; it gets cold enough for its exterior walls and windows to drop below the dew point of the air leaking in from the rest of the house. Condensation forms behind the dresser and in the closet corners, and mould follows. If the room has plumbing on an outside wall — a bathroom over a garage, a kitchen addition on a 1950s Roseland bungalow — a sustained -15°C stretch can freeze the pipe. Keep every room above roughly 15°C, closed door or not.

What to do instead

  • Set the thermostat back a few degrees when the house is empty or asleep; that reduces what the furnace produces, which is the only thing that actually saves gas. See what temperature to set when away.
  • Rebalance at the dampers, not the registers: partially closing the basement dampers on rooms that overheat sends more air to rooms that starve without choking the system. See improving airflow to one room.
  • If one or two registers must be reduced — a storage room, a spare room in a 15-register house — close them no more than halfway, and never more than a couple.
  • For a finished basement that overheats in winter, partially close its dampers in November and reopen them in May.

  • Seal and insulate: sealed ducts and a tighter envelope save more than any register strategy.

What about smart vents?

Motorized register systems promise room-by-room control by closing vents automatically. They run into the same physics; the better ones monitor duct pressure and limit how many vents close at once, which is an admission of the problem. In a system with a modern zoning panel and a bypass or a variable-speed blower designed for it, room control works well. Bolted onto an ordinary single-stage furnace with leaky ducts, it mostly redistributes the trouble.
