Why is my second floor so hot in summer?

Your second floor is hot in summer because warm air rises and collects under a roof baking at 50°C or more, while a single air conditioner run by a main-floor thermostat shuts off before the bedrooms cool. Long duct runs, too few upstairs returns and thin attic insulation make it worse. Duct balancing, attic sealing and insulation, zoning, or a ductless head are the fixes, roughly in order of cost.

Why is your second floor so hot in summer when the main floor is fine? Because three things stack against it at once: physics, the attic above it, and the way most single-system houses are controlled. None of them is a defect, exactly, but together they can leave the bedrooms several degrees warmer than the thermostat reading downstairs.

Heat rises, and the attic pushes it back down

Warm air is lighter, so it drifts upstairs and stays there. Above the ceiling, an unvented or poorly vented attic on a sunny July day can reach 50–60°C, and that heat radiates down through whatever insulation is up there for hours after dark. Current Ontario code packages call for around R-60 in a new attic; a 1970s or 80s house in Millcroft or Glen Abbey often has far less, and what is there has settled and been disturbed by decades of wiring and pot-light installs. Sealing the top plates and pot lights, then topping up insulation, is the single highest-return fix for a hot upstairs.

One thermostat, one system, and the bedrooms are last in line

In most two-storey homes built from the 1970s onward, a single furnace-mounted system serves both floors, and the thermostat lives in the main-floor hallway. Once that hallway hits the setpoint the system stops, whether or not the upstairs has caught up. The second-floor supplies are also at the far end of the trunk duct, so they get the least air at the lowest pressure, and many of these houses have a single return grille upstairs or none at all, so warm air has no path back to the coil.

Rooms over the garage are the extreme case. A bonus room in a 2000s Alton Village or River Oaks home sits on a floor over unconditioned space, with three exterior walls and usually one small supply; it is the hottest room in the house in July and the coldest in January. Fixes that cost nothing, in the order to try them

  • Open every upstairs register fully and partially close two or three main-floor supplies — never more than that, or you raise duct pressure and strain the blower.
  • Find the balancing dampers on the round take-offs in the basement. Many homes have them, sometimes labelled summer/winter, and they have not been touched since the house was built. Close down the main-floor branches a turn or two.
  • Set the thermostat fan to On or Circulate on hot days so air keeps mixing between floors after the compressor stops.
  • Keep bedroom doors open, or at least undercut, so supply air can find its way back to the return.
  • Shade west-facing windows from mid-afternoon; a bedroom facing the setting sun gains more heat in those two hours than in the rest of the day.

Fixes that cost money, from least to most

  • Attic air-sealing and insulation top-up — usually the best dollar spent, and it cuts winter bills as well.
  • A thermostat with a remote sensor in the main bedroom, so the system averages upstairs and downstairs or follows the bedroom at night.
  • Duct modifications — adding an upstairs return, enlarging a starved supply, or sealing the trunk joints in the basement.
  • Zoning — motorized dampers and a second thermostat let one system treat the floors separately. Works best with a two-stage or variable-speed system that can run at low output for one zone.
  • A ductless head in the worst room or a small multi-zone system for the whole floor: a single-zone ductless mini-split installs for $4,000–$7,000 and is the usual answer for 1.5-storey pre-war houses in Kerr Village, Westdale or Aldershot, where the knee-wall attic makes ducts impractical.

  • Will a bigger air conditioner fix a hot second floor? Almost never. The problem is distribution, not capacity, and an oversized unit short-cycles and leaves the house humid.
