What does Navien error code E003 mean?

Reviewed by Zobir, licensed technician

Tankless hot water heater mounted on a wall

Quick answer

Navien error code E003 means ignition failure: the heater called for flame and could not prove one, so it locked out. Check that the gas shut-off at the unit is open, clear snow or ice from the vent terminations, then reset once. If E003 returns, stop resetting and book a licensed gas technician. Any gas smell: leave and call Enbridge Gas from outside.

Navien error code E003 means ignition failure. The NPE-2 user manual lists it in those two words: the control opened the gas valve, fired the igniter, looked for a flame signal and did not get one, so it stopped trying and locked out. Until the cause is cleared, that unit makes no hot water. Code tables differ between Navien generations, so check E003 against the label inside the front cover or the manual for your exact model; where they disagree with a web page, the label wins.

Is it safe to keep resetting a Navien showing E003?

One reset is reasonable; a string of them is not. Each failed ignition trial releases a little unburned gas into the combustion chamber before the control gives up, and stacking trial on trial is how a hard, noisy light-off happens. The lockout is the heater protecting itself, so treat a second E003 as the answer, not as an obstacle.

If you smell gas at any point, do not touch the heater or any light switch. Leave the house and call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 from outside; the full steps are in what to do if you smell gas.

The one check a homeowner can do for E003

Navien's manual gives the owner a single action for this code: ensure that the main gas supply valve is open. In an Ontario winter, add a look outside.

  • Find the gas shut-off on the pipe feeding the heater. The handle should sit parallel to the pipe; crosswise means closed.
  • Check whether your other gas appliances work. If the furnace and range are dead too, the problem is at the meter or the supply, and that is a call to Enbridge, not a water heater repair.
  • Walk outside to the vent pipes on the wall. Brush snow, frost and ice away from the intake and exhaust openings by hand; do not chip at the plastic.
  • Turn the heater off at its power button, wait a minute, turn it back on and open a hot tap. That is your one reset.

What causes Navien E003, most likely first

  • Gas supply closed or undersized. A valve left shut after other work, or a gas line sized for the old tank: a tankless unit pulls much more gas at once than a tank, and a line that fed a tank comfortably can starve the burner at light-off.
  • Air in the gas line. After a meter change, or after a fitter adds a branch for a range or barbecue, the pipe holds air that has to be purged before the burner will light.
  • A fouled igniter or flame rod. Either the igniter no longer lights the gas reliably, or the burner lights and the coated flame rod cannot prove it, so the control counts the trial as failed.
  • Ice or snow over the sidewall terminations. A condensing heater breathes out wet exhaust that freezes at the outlet, and drifts bury low wall terminations in a storm.
  • A poor electrical ground. The flame signal is a tiny current that returns through the ground path, so a loose ground wire can make a good flame invisible to the board.

What a gas technician does on an E003 call

The first tool out of the bag is a manometer. The technician reads gas pressure at the heater while it tries to fire, then again with the furnace running, because a supply that looks fine at rest can sag under load. From there the burner chamber is opened to inspect and clean the igniter and flame rod, the ground is checked for continuity, and the vent and condensate path are confirmed clear.

None of that is homeowner work. In Ontario, gas pressure, igniter and flame-rod work on a water heater belongs to a TSSA-licensed G2 technician working under the CSA B149.1 gas code. If the supply line turns out to be undersized, the fix is a larger gas run, not another part inside the heater.

What an E003 repair costs

  • Diagnostic visit for an ignition lockout: $90–$150, folded into the repair if you proceed.
  • Most tankless repairs, igniter and flame-rod work included: $150–$800.
  • Upsizing a gas run that was sized for a tank: $400–$1,200 added, quoted in writing first.

Figures for other jobs are on our pricing page. Every Navien code we see is listed in the Navien error code guide, and a burner that lights and then drops out is a separate fault: see Navien E012.
