Quick answer
Navien error code E012 means flame loss: the burner lit, then the flame signal dropped out while the heater was running. The unit shuts the gas off by itself, so you get hot-then-cold water, not a hazard. Clean the intake air filter and clear the outside vent terminations. If E012 recurs, especially when the furnace or range is on, call a licensed gas technician.
If your shower went cold halfway through and the display now reads E012, the short version is this: Navien error code E012 means flame loss. The burner lit normally, then the flame signal disappeared during operation and the control closed the gas valve. That separates it from an ignition failure, E003: this heater can light, it just cannot stay lit. The meaning comes from Navien's NPE-2 user manual; other Navien series may differ, and the label inside your panel beats any chart online.
Is E012 dangerous, and can the heater keep running?
E012 is a nuisance more than a hazard. When the flame signal drops, the burner shuts itself off, so what you notice is water that runs hot and then cold. The heater will often relight on the next demand, which is why the code can come and go for weeks.
What you should not do is keep resetting a unit that drops its flame again and again. A flame that will not hold means the burner is short of air or short of gas, and both get worse with time. Write down when it happens; that detail is worth more to the technician than the code itself.
Clean the intake air filter and check the terminations first
Cleaning the intake air filter is a user task in the Navien manual, and a clogged filter is the first thing to rule out with E012.
- Turn the heater off and unplug it before opening anything.
- Follow the manual's steps for your model to remove the intake air filter, rinse it under clean running water with a soft brush, let it dry completely and refit it.
- Go outside and look at the vent terminations. Clear snow, frost, leaves, lint and spider webs from both the intake and the exhaust.
- Restore power and run a hot tap for ten minutes. If the flame holds, you are done.
On installs that draw combustion air from the room instead of through a second pipe, dryer lint and renovation dust load the filter quickly. A heater that shares a room with the laundry needs that filter checked several times a year.
What makes a Navien lose its flame
- A dirty intake air filter. Less air reaches the burner, and the flame turns unstable and lifts away from the flame rod.
- Gas pressure sagging under load. The heater holds a flame alone but loses it when the furnace or range fires at the same time, because the shared gas line or the regulator cannot feed all of them.
- Exhaust recirculating into the intake. Wind, a fence, a deck or terminations set too close together push flue gas back into the intake, and a burner breathing its own exhaust goes out.
- A dirty flame rod. The flame is there, but the coated rod reads it weakly and the signal falls below what the board accepts.
- A poor ground, which weakens the same signal from the other end of the circuit.
The decision rule: does E012 only appear when other gas appliances run?
Run this test before you call. With the furnace off, run a hot tap for ten minutes; then repeat it with the furnace firing and a range burner lit. If E012 appears only in the second test, the heater is fine and the gas supply is not.
That result points to gas-line sizing or regulator pressure. It is common after a tank-to-tankless conversion where the original line was kept. Confirming it takes a manometer on the heater's gas inlet under full load, and that measurement and any piping change need a G2 licence; does a tankless need a bigger gas line explains the sizing.
What a flame-loss repair costs
- Service call and diagnosis of a flame-loss fault: $90–$150, credited toward the fix.
- Cleaning or replacing the flame rod, and other tankless repairs: $150–$800.
- Upsizing an undersized gas run: typically $400–$1,200 on top, depending on length and route.
If the symptom is temperature swings with no code at all, read why a tankless goes hot then cold; the other codes are in the Navien error code guide.
