Quick answer
Daikin error code U4 means a signal transmission error between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit: the two halves of the system have stopped talking, so heating and cooling stop. It is not dangerous. Switch the breaker off for a few minutes, confirm the outdoor disconnect is on, and restore power once. If U4 returns, the wiring or a circuit board needs testing by a technician.
Daikin error code U4 means the indoor unit and the outdoor unit have lost their signal link. Daikin's service manual lists it as a signal transmission error between the two units, and the system stops heating and cooling until the link is restored. Nothing about U4 is dangerous to the house, but the code will not clear while the fault exists. Codes vary by model, so check the wiring diagram and label inside your unit's panel; where it differs from this page, the label wins.
Is it safe to leave a Daikin showing U4?
Yes, it is safe, and no, it will not heat or cool. The system shuts itself down because the indoor board and the outdoor board can no longer confirm what the other is doing, and an inverter compressor is not allowed to run blind. In January that matters more than in July: if this heat pump is the only heat in the room or the house, set up another heat source while you wait for the repair.
U4 is a different situation from a unit that is simply dead. If the indoor head shows a blinking light and no code, start with why a mini-split light blinks; if there is no display at all, see why a mini-split will not turn on.
The one step to try before calling: a single power reset
- Switch the system's breaker off at the electrical panel and leave it off for a few minutes.
- Walk outside and confirm the disconnect switch beside the outdoor unit is in the on position. It gets pulled for yard work or a siding job and forgotten.
- Turn the breaker back on, give both units a few minutes to start up, and call for heating or cooling from the remote.
- If U4 comes back, stop there. A second and third reset will not repair a broken signal path, and the terminals behind the covers carry line voltage.
What causes U4 on a Daikin, most likely first
U4 has four causes in Daikin's manual, and three of them sit in the path between the two units. The manual singles out wire No. 3 of the interconnecting cable, the conductor that carries the signal.
- A wiring error or a break in the interconnecting cable. A system that has shown U4 since the day it was installed points to conductors on the wrong terminals; one that ran for years and then faulted points to damage, such as a cable nicked during a renovation.
- A splice or a loose terminal. Joints in the cable run and terminal screws that have backed off make an intermittent U4 that comes and goes with temperature and vibration.
- A defective outdoor or indoor PCB. Each circuit board has to send and receive on that signal wire; when one fails, the cable tests fine and the code stays.
- A disturbed power-supply waveform. Daikin lists distorted incoming power as a cause, so tell the technician if U4 first appeared during a storm, a brownout or while the house was on a generator.
How a technician finds a U4 fault, and what it costs
The fault is found with a meter, not by swapping parts. A technician measures AC and DC voltage between the terminals at the outdoor and indoor ends of the cable and compares the readings with Daikin's service manual. Readings that are right at one end and wrong at the other put the fault in the cable; readings that match at both ends point toward a board.
- Service call and diagnosis: $90–$150, taken off the bill when you approve the fix.
- Re-making a loose or corroded termination: a small repair, quoted on the spot.
- A new interconnecting cable or a replacement PCB: written quote first, because the price depends on the cable route and the board for your model.
Before approving a board, check the warranty registration for the system. A PCB that fails inside the manufacturer's parts warranty changes what you pay, and the model and serial numbers on both units are what the claim needs.
When to call for Daikin U4 service
Call when U4 returns after one reset. ZK Mechanical services Daikin ductless and ducted heat pumps from our Burlington shop across Oakville, Milton, Hamilton, Mississauga and Brampton, and a heat pump repair visit for this code starts with those voltage readings. The rest of the fault table is in our Daikin error code guide. Call (647) 801-1252 or request a visit, and tell us the model number and when the code first appeared.
