Heat Pump Repair · Oakville, OntarioHeat Pump Repair in Oakville
Heat pump repair in Oakville usually comes down to one of five parts: a capacitor, a contactor, a fan motor, a defrost sensor or a control board. Most of those repairs cost $150–$800, after a $90–$150 diagnostic that is credited to the job if you go ahead. If the outdoor unit is a solid block of ice, grinding, or tripping its breaker, switch it off at the thermostat and call (647) 801-1252; otherwise it can stay running until a technician has looked at it.
Why Oakville heat pumps fail, and what the repair costs
The most common heat pump in Oakville is half of a hybrid system. In Glen Abbey, River Oaks and West Oak Trails the outdoor unit shares ductwork with a gas furnace, and the thermostat hands the house to the furnace below a set outdoor temperature. That arrangement hides failures: when the heat pump quits, the furnace covers for it and the house stays warm. The clues are a thermostat showing auxiliary or backup heat on a mild day, an outdoor fan that never turns, and an Enbridge bill that looks like the years before the heat pump went in.
Being close to Lake Ontario changes what fails. Frost builds fastest when the air is damp and hovering around freezing, which describes much of an Oakville winter south of the QEW, so these units run more defrost cycles than the same model would inland. A defrost board or outdoor coil sensor that has drifted out of range shows up here first, as ice that creeps up the coil and never clears. Freezing rain and meltwater from an eavestrough above the unit do the same damage from the outside, which is why we look at where the unit sits as well as what is inside it.
Old Oakville and Bronte are mostly ductless: wall heads in older lakefront houses that never had ducts, with faults of their own, such as a blocked condensate line dripping down the wall, a blower wheel matted with dust, or a communication error that flashes a code on the display. A reversing valve stuck mid-travel is the repair to think hardest about. If only its solenoid coil has failed, the fix is small; if the valve body has to be cut out, the refrigerant must be recovered and the circuit brazed, and on a unit past 12 years we put a replacement price beside it.
Refrigerant work in Ontario requires an ODP card, and newer units charged with R-32 or R-454B need recovery equipment rated for those mildly flammable refrigerants; both are on the van. Any wiring beyond the unit's own disconnect is done by a licensed electrician under an ESA permit, and Oakville Hydro only becomes involved if the service to the house is changed. For how the faults are diagnosed, see the heat pump repair service page; if the unit is beyond saving, heat pump installation in Oakville covers replacement and the rebate. The Oakville service area page lists our other work in town, and you can book a diagnostic at any hour.

Heat Pump Repair in Oakville — FAQs
What does heat pump repair cost in Oakville?
The usual price bands are these. Diagnostic visit: $90–$150, credited toward the repair. Capacitor or contactor: $150–$350. Outdoor fan motor or indoor blower motor: $300–$700. Control or defrost board: $400–$800. Finding and sealing a refrigerant leak, then recharging: $300–$800 or more. Compressor and reversing-valve jobs are quoted individually after testing. You get the figure in writing before any part is ordered.
My heat pump is covered in ice. Is that an emergency?
A thin white frost that clears every hour or so is normal defrost behaviour. Solid ice across the coil or on the fan blades is not, and running the unit that way can damage it. Turn the heat pump off at the thermostat, let the furnace or backup heat carry the house, clear snow from around the cabinet, and call. Do not chip at the ice: the fins are thin. Why heat pumps ice up explains the causes.
How do I know the heat pump in my hybrid system has stopped working?
Check three things on a mild day, a few degrees above freezing. The thermostat should show the heat pump stage running, not auxiliary or emergency heat. The outdoor fan should be turning and the compressor humming. And the furnace burner should stay off. If the furnace is doing all the work in mild weather, either the heat pump has faulted or the switchover setting is wrong, and both are worth a diagnostic visit.
Should I repair or replace a 12-year-old heat pump?
Repair it when the fault is a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, sensor or board: those cost $150–$800 and the unit usually has years left. Lean toward replacement when the compressor or reversing valve has failed on a unit past 12 years, or when the repair quote passes half the price of a new system. Current Ontario programs return up to $7,500 on a qualifying cold-climate unit. Should I repair or replace my heat pump works through it.
Can a power flicker knock out my heat pump?
Yes. Inverter-driven units protect themselves after a voltage dip and can sit in a lockout that looks like a dead unit. Confirm the outage is over, switch the heat pump's breaker off for five minutes, then back on, and give it ten minutes to restart. Do that once only. If it trips again or shows a fault code, leave it off and call; a breaker that keeps tripping is reporting a real electrical fault.
