AC Repair in Etobicoke

AC repair in Etobicoke usually comes down to one of three inexpensive parts: a run capacitor, a contactor or a clogged condensate drain, each fixed in one visit for $150–$450. A fan motor, control board or refrigerant leak sits higher, up to $800, and the $90–$150 diagnostic is credited to whichever repair you approve. If the copper line at the outdoor unit is iced over, switch cooling off and leave the fan running before you call.

Why Etobicoke air conditioners fail, and what each repair costs

Central air in most Etobicoke bungalows was added years after the house was built: an evaporator coil set on top of the furnace in a low basement, feeding ducts that were sized for heat. A storey-and-a-half house makes it harder, because the upper floor is served by one or two small ducts running up an inside wall. Low airflow across the coil is the result, and low airflow is what turns a dirty filter into a block of ice and a call about warm air upstairs. We measure the temperature drop across the coil and the pressure in the ducts before touching the refrigerant, because adding charge to a starved coil makes it worse.

Humidity off Lake Ontario is the second local factor, strongest in Mimico, Long Branch and Humber Bay. An air conditioner there pulls litres of water out of the air on a muggy day, all of it leaving through a small drain line that grows algae and plugs. Water around the base of the furnace in July is nearly always that drain, a $150–$350 cleaning or trap replacement and not a leak in the furnace. A float switch that cuts the cooling when the pan fills protects a finished basement, and we fit one on request.

Two kinds of Etobicoke home have no central air to repair. Older houses in the Kingsway with boilers and radiators have no ducts, so they cool with ductless heads or a small-duct system in the attic, and their faults are different: a blocked drain at the indoor head, a dirty blower wheel, a communication error between the indoor and outdoor units. Suites in the Humber Bay Shores towers cool with fan coils fed by the building's chilled water, and a two-pipe building delivers either heating or cooling depending on the season, so no cooling in early May can be the changeover date and not a fault. Who is responsible for a condo fan coil unit explains where the owner's side ends.

Age decides the bigger repairs. Condensers built before about 2010 run on R-22, which has not been made or imported into Canada since 2020, so a leak repair and recharge on one of those can cost more than the unit is worth; past 12 years, on R-22, with a compressor or leak fault, we price a replacement beside the repair. Refrigerant work is done by a technician holding an ODP card, as Ontario requires. See AC repair for how the diagnostic runs, second-floor cooling if the upstairs never catches up, the Etobicoke service area page for our other local work, or book a visit.

AC Repair in Etobicoke — FAQs

How much does AC repair cost in Etobicoke?

The diagnostic is $90–$150 and is credited to the work. By part: run capacitor $150–$350, contactor $150–$350, drain cleaning or trap $150–$350, condenser or blower fan motor $300–$700, control board $400–$800, refrigerant leak repair and recharge $300–$800 or more depending on where the leak is. You approve one written price for your fault before the technician starts, and the rate does not change after hours.

The upstairs of my storey-and-a-half never cools. Is that a repair?

Sometimes. If it cooled properly in past summers, look for a fault: a dirty coil, a failing blower motor, low charge from a leak, or a duct that has come apart behind the knee wall. If it has never cooled well, the ducts are the limit and no repair changes that. The honest options then are balancing dampers, a return added upstairs, or a ductless head for the top floor, and we say which applies after measuring.

Do you repair fan coil units in Humber Bay Shores?

Yes. Inside the suite we replace fan motors, control valves and thermostats, clear condensate pans and clean coils. Start with your property manager: some corporations maintain the fan coils themselves, and the water to the unit has to be isolated by building staff before a valve comes out. If the unit is dripping, shut it off at the thermostat and tell the concierge so the suite below is checked.

My air conditioner stopped after a storm. What should I check?

Start at the panel: reset the AC breaker once, fully off and back on. Check that the pull-out disconnect beside the outdoor unit is seated, then wait five minutes, because most systems hold the compressor off briefly after a Toronto Hydro flicker. If the breaker trips again or the outdoor unit hums without starting, stop resetting it. That points to a capacitor or a shorted component, and repeated resets push full current through the fault.

Can AC repair wait until Monday?

Usually, if the house is only uncomfortable. Turn the system off if the coil or copper line is iced, and run the fan to thaw it. Call the same day if anyone at home is an infant, elderly or unwell, when water is reaching a ceiling or finished floor, or when you smell burning at the outdoor unit. Weekend and evening visits cost the same as weekday ones, so waiting saves nothing. A dripping indoor unit has its own checklist.
