AC Repair in Waterdown

AC repair in Waterdown costs $150–$800 for most faults, and the two most common ones, a failed capacitor or a pitted contactor, are $150–$350 and fixed in one visit. The diagnostic is $90–$150 and is credited to the repair. If the outdoor unit hums but the fan does not turn, or the copper line is iced over, switch the cooling off at the thermostat and call, because running it that way damages the compressor.

Air conditioner repair for Waterdown's subdivisions and village core

Waterdown grew fast, and a large share of its air conditioners are the builder-installed units that came with the 2000s–2020s subdivisions. The earliest of those are now old enough that the same parts are wearing out at about the same time: the run capacitor that starts the compressor and fan, the contactor that switches the unit on, and the condenser fan motor at $300–$700. These are repairs, not reasons to replace. A unit under 12 years old with one of these faults should be fixed.

Tight lots cause their own problems. Condensers in these subdivisions sit in narrow side yards between houses, often beside a dryer vent, and lint, cottonwood fluff and grass clippings mat the coil until the unit runs hot and trips on high pressure. Rinsing the coil gently with a garden hose each spring, power off at the disconnect, is a job a homeowner can do. Two-storey plans with one thermostat on the main floor also produce the 'upstairs will not cool' call, which is often ducts and airflow and not a broken air conditioner; second-floor cooling covers that.

The village core and the older homes around it hold a different age of equipment. Units installed before about 2010 run on R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced and survives only as reclaimed stock. A leak on one of those is where we stop and price a replacement beside the repair: when the repair is more than half the cost of a new unit and the unit is past 12 years, replacing wins. A newer R-410A unit with a leak is repaired, at $300–$800+ for finding the leak, sealing it and recharging.

Waterdown is a short trip for us, because the shop on North Service Road in Burlington is just down the Escarpment by Waterdown Road or Highway 6. Refrigerant work is done by ODP-certified technicians, and a Saturday call costs the same as a Tuesday one. The full service is described on our AC repair page, and the Waterdown page lists everything else we do locally. To book, contact us with the make and age of the unit if you know them.

AC Repair in Waterdown — FAQs

How much does air conditioner repair cost in Waterdown?

Capacitor or contactor: $150–$350. Condenser or blower fan motor: $300–$700. Control board: $400–$800. Refrigerant leak repair and recharge: $300–$800+, because finding and sealing the leak takes longer than the recharge. The diagnostic fee is $90–$150 and is credited if you go ahead. Each of these is quoted before the work starts, and our pricing page lists every published range.

What can I check myself before booking AC repair?

Set the thermostat to cool and a few degrees below room temperature. Check the breaker, then the pull-out disconnect in the grey box beside the outdoor unit, which sometimes gets left out after yard work. Replace the furnace filter if it is grey and matted. If the larger copper line at the outdoor unit is frosted, turn cooling off and run the fan only for a few hours to thaw the coil, then call.

Water is dripping near my furnace when the AC runs. Is that the air conditioner?

Yes. The cooling coil above the furnace pulls moisture out of the air and drains it through a small plastic line to the floor drain or a pump. When that line clogs with algae, water overflows the pan and runs down into the furnace. Turn the cooling off and book AC drain line cleaning; it is a small repair, and catching it early protects the furnace control board underneath.

My Waterdown house is 12 years old and the AC is original. Repair or replace?

Repair, if the fault is a capacitor, a contactor or a fan motor, since those parts fail on otherwise healthy units. Consider replacing when the compressor has failed or the coil is leaking and the repair is more than half the cost of a new system; installs run $4,500–$7,000. A replacement has to meet the current 13.4 SEER2 minimum, so it will use less electricity than the original did.

Do you repair ductless units in older Waterdown homes without ducts?

Yes. Houses in the village core built without ductwork are often cooled by ductless mini-splits, and their common faults are different: a dirty indoor coil and blower wheel, a blocked condensate drain, a communication error between the indoor head and the outdoor unit, or a refrigerant leak at a flare joint. We service Mitsubishi, Fujitsu and Daikin ductless systems and price the repair in writing first.
