Quick answer
7 flashes on a water heater status light means a gas control electronic fault: the Honeywell control on Bradford White and A. O. Smith-family tanks has detected an internal failure and taken itself out of service. There is no hot water until it is resolved. Turn the knob to OFF, wait 10 minutes, and relight once following the label. If 7 flashes returns, the gas control has to be replaced.
7 flashes on a water heater status light is the gas control reporting a fault in itself. On the Honeywell electronic gas control fitted to Bradford White ICON tanks and to A. O. Smith-family tanks (John Wood and GSW in Ontario), this count means a gas control electronic fault, also called an internal control failure. The pilot and the burner are not the suspects. The part that decides when to open the gas has stopped trusting its own electronics.
Can you keep using a water heater that shows 7 flashes?
There is nothing to keep using: the control has taken itself out of service, so the tank will not heat until the fault clears or the control is replaced. That is the right behaviour for a gas valve with doubtful electronics. You have whatever hot water is left in the tank, and then none.
Two situations call for skipping the reset altogether. If the control has been wet, whether from a leak above it, a relief valve discharge or water on the basement floor, leave the knob at OFF. And if there is a gas odour near the heater, go outside before you phone Enbridge Gas.
The one reset worth trying on a 7-flash code
One relight is the homeowner step, because the first cause on the list is simply a control that needs a reset.
- Turn the gas control knob to OFF.
- Wait 10 minutes. The pause lets the thermopile cool so the control powers down completely.
- Relight the pilot once, following the lighting instructions printed on the tank step by step. How to relight a water heater pilot light explains the sequence if the label is worn.
- Watch the status light for the next several minutes. A return to the normal pattern shown on the label means the reset took.
- If 7 flashes comes back, turn the knob to OFF and stop. A second and third relight will not change the result.
What causes a gas control electronic fault
- The control needs a reset. A one-time fault clears with the OFF, wait, relight sequence and does not return.
- The control is wet. Water from a leaking fitting above the tank, a dripping relief valve line or a flooded floor has reached the electronics. A gas control that has been under water gets replaced, not dried out.
- The control is physically damaged. A knock from stored boxes, a cracked housing or a pinched wire harness will do it.
- The control has failed internally. If nothing above applies and the code returns after one relight, the electronics are finished.
Replacing the gas control valve: what the technician does
A returning 7-flash code ends in a new gas control valve. The technician shuts off the gas, disconnects the pilot, thermopile and burner connections, fits the control specified for that model, then relights the heater and leak-tests every joint. In Ontario that work belongs to a TSSA-licensed gas technician working to the CSA B149.1 gas code. It is not a homeowner repair.
A gas control valve replacement runs $400–$600, with the $90–$150 diagnostic folded in when you proceed. Our water heater gas valve replacement page describes the job. Where the tank is past 10 to 12 years or showing rust at the base, a $1,200–$2,500 tank swap is often the better use of the money, and we price both in writing.
Wet basements, floor-level tanks and rental stickers
Water is the cause worth ruling out first. A tank water heater sits on the basement floor, usually near the floor drain, so a backed-up drain or a leak from the tank itself can put the bottom of the heater in water. What to do if a water heater floods the basement covers the shut-off order. If water reached the gas control or the burner area, the heater stays off until a technician has inspected it.
Check for an Enercare or Reliance sticker before you book anyone. On a rental tank the provider is responsible for the repair, so that call goes to the number on the sticker.
ZK Mechanical services owned gas water heaters in Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Hamilton and Mississauga. See water heater services, check the other counts in the Bradford White water heater error code guide, or call (647) 801-1252; you can also request a visit online. Other makes use different charts, so the label on your own tank has the final word.
