Quick answer
Rinnai error code 10 means the air supply or exhaust is blocked; on SENSEI models it also means the condensate trap is full. The heater shuts off so flue gas and condensate cannot spill, and it should not be forced to run. Check that the condensate drain line is not frozen, kinked or clogged and that the outside vent termination is clear of snow and ice.
Rinnai error code 10 is the heater telling you it cannot breathe: the combustion fan is not moving the air it expects, or, on SENSEI and SENSEI RX/CX models, condensate has backed up into the trap inside the cabinet. Rinnai's diagnostic guide lists it as “Air Supply, Exhaust Blockage or Condensate Trap is Full”. In an Ontario winter the cause is usually outside the house or in the drain line, not inside the heater. Codes vary by model, so the data sheet on the label inside the front panel is the final word for yours.
Is it safe to keep running a Rinnai showing code 10?
No. The heater shuts down on code 10 to prevent flue gas spilling into the house or condensate overflowing inside the cabinet, and a reset does not clear a blocked vent. Rinnai's instruction to technicians is that a water heater must never be left operating with the intake or exhaust piping disconnected, so pulling a vent pipe off to get a shower is not an option. Leave the heater off until the cause is found.
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or anyone in the house has a headache or nausea while the heater has been trying to run, go outside and call 911.
The one safe check: the condensate drain and the outside vent
- Follow the condensate drain line from the bottom of the heater to where it ends. Look for a kink, a sag full of water, a plugged end sitting in a floor drain or laundry tub, or ice where the line runs through an unheated space or discharges outdoors.
- Go outside and find the vent termination on the wall or roof. Clear snow, ice, leaves or a nest away from it by hand; do not chip at the plastic or push anything into the pipe.
- If the drain or the termination was blocked and is now clear, turn the heater off and on at the controller and run a hot tap. A code that stays away was a blockage; one that returns needs a technician.
- Stop there. Leave the front cover on and every vent joint alone.
A drain line frozen inside a wall will not thaw from a hair dryer aimed at the visible end. If you can see ice in the tube, what to do when a tankless water heater is frozen covers the safe way to warm it.
What causes code 10 on a Rinnai, most likely first
- A clogged or frozen condensate line (SENSEI and SENSEI RX/CX). When the line cannot drain, condensate backs up into the trap inside the heater and the control shuts the burner off before it spills.
- A dirty inlet air filter. SENSEI models have a filter under the front cover that loads up with lint and dust, faster when the heater shares a room with a dryer.
- A blocked or crushed vent. Snow, ice, insects and debris are the usual blockages; Rinnai also warns that spray foam packed around the wall penetration can collapse the pipe.
- Vent joints that are not fully seated. Rinnai's guide ties badly connected joints to exhaust gas leakage and code 10.
- A vent run over the allowed equivalent length. With Rinnai's concentric venting each 90-degree elbow counts as six feet of pipe and each 45-degree elbow as three, so a run with several turns can exceed the limit while looking short.
- Less often: a failing combustion fan, its wiring harness, or debris packed into the burner and the heat exchanger fins.
What a technician does when code 10 will not clear
When the drain and the termination are clear and code 10 persists, the vent system has to be inspected section by section. The technician marks each joint, separates it, checks the insertion depth, and looks inside for water, debris or a collapsed section. The run is measured and the elbows counted against the equivalent length the installation manual allows, and the termination clearances are checked against the venting instructions.
If the venting passes, the work moves inside the cabinet: the air filter, the fan wheel and housing, the check valve behind the fan on SENSEI models, then the burner and heat exchanger fins. That is gas-appliance work, which in Ontario requires a TSSA gas licence. Any change to the vent run has to follow the manufacturer's venting instructions and the CSA B149.1 gas code.
What a code 10 repair costs
- Diagnostic fee: $90–$150, and it comes off the repair price.
- Clearing a condensate drain or replacing a trap: $150–$350.
- Most tankless repairs, fan and wiring faults included: $150–$800.
- Rebuilding or re-routing a vent run that is over length: a written quote after the run is measured, because pipe length and wall or roof work differ in every house.
A cold snap is when code 10 shows up most: drain lines routed along an outside wall freeze, and drifting snow buries low sidewall terminations.
