How much does a furnace blower motor cost?

Quick answer

A furnace blower motor costs $500–$1,500 installed in the GTA. A standard PSC motor with its run capacitor sits near the bottom of that range; a variable-speed ECM motor sits at the top, because the motor and its electronic control module are usually replaced together. Access matters too — a blower boxed into a tight utility room adds labour to the same part.

The range for a furnace blower motor across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is $500–$1,500 installed, and that spread is not padding. It reflects two different parts doing the same job. Which one you own is printed on the motor nameplate, and it decides most of the bill before a technician touches anything.

PSC versus ECM: the reason for the range

Older and base-model furnaces use a PSC motor — a simple multi-speed induction motor, commonly a half or three-quarter horsepower unit running at 1,075 RPM with four speed taps, paired with a run capacitor. Parts are widely available, universal replacements exist, and the changeover is straightforward.

High-efficiency and variable-speed furnaces use an ECM, an electronically commutated motor with a control module bolted to its end bell. That module is programmed for the furnace it came in, the assembly is usually sold as a pair, and it costs several times what a PSC motor does. That is the top of the range, and it explains why the same symptom in two neighbouring houses produces two different quotes.

Symptoms that point at the motor

  • A hum with no rotation, and a wheel that spins freely by hand with the power off. That is often the run capacitor rather than the motor, and a far smaller repair.
  • A rising squeal that worsens over weeks. Bearings caught early may only need a mount or lubrication fix; ignored for a season it becomes the full replacement — why a furnace makes loud noises covers the sounds.
  • The blower runs, stops on its own after a few minutes, then restarts later. That is the thermal overload cutting out, usually from a dragging bearing or a badly restricted duct system.
  • Only one speed works — heat fine and cooling dead, or the reverse. On a PSC that is a burned winding or a failed tap; on an ECM it is nearly always the module.
  • A hot, varnish-like smell at the registers with no smoke. Windings running too hot.

Cheaper faults that look identical

Before anyone quotes a motor, four things deserve a meter: the run capacitor, the blower relay on the control board, the blower door safety switch, and the low-voltage fuse. A capacitor or a door switch is a small part and a short visit. A control board with a failed blower relay is $500–$1,200, which lands in the same territory as a motor and needs to be told apart properly rather than assumed.

The other frequent culprit is a blower wheel packed with dust. A loaded wheel moves less air, runs the motor hotter and shakes the whole assembly, and cleaning it can restore airflow that everyone had written off as a dying motor. If the furnace fan never seems to stop or the house heats unevenly, start there.

Why the same motor costs more in some houses

Labour is not identical everywhere. In the century homes of Westdale and Dundas, the furnace often stands where a coal-fired octopus once did, jammed against a stone foundation with the plenum built around it. Getting the blower assembly out can mean dropping sheet metal that was never designed to come apart. A 2000s furnace in an open Alton Village basement is a fraction of that time, with the same part in the box.

Condo and townhouse fan coils are a category of their own again — closet access, a service corridor to protect, and often a building rule about which hours trades may run equipment. Those get quoted after somebody has seen the space.

Motor, or a new furnace?

A blower motor in a furnace under about 12 years old is worth doing without much debate. Past 15, spending toward the upper end of $500–$1,500 on a unit whose heat exchanger, inducer and board are all the same age is money you may want back. A high-efficiency replacement installs for $4,500–$7,500, and furnace-only upgrades typically see $500–$1,500 back under current Ontario programs.
