A hot surface igniter is the ceramic element that glows orange and lights the burners on most furnaces built since the mid-1990s, and replacing one runs $200–$450 installed. It is a consumable part rather than a defect. Every call for heat takes it to incandescence and lets it cool again, and eventually the element cracks along that stress line.
What decides where an igniter job lands in the $200–$450 range
- Which element the furnace takes. Older silicon carbide igniters are brittle, spade-shaped and sit on a fragile bracket. Newer silicon nitride elements are sturdier, and many are sold as universal replacements with a wiring kit.
- Voltage. Not every igniter runs on 120 volts; some furnaces drive a lower-voltage element from the board, and fitting the wrong one destroys it on the first call for heat.
- OEM part or equivalent. On a furnace still inside its parts warranty, the manufacturer's number is the right call so nobody argues about coverage later.
- Access. Some burner compartments release the igniter in five minutes; others need the whole burner assembly drawn out first.
- What else turns up. If the sensor is fouled or the pressure switch is marginal, those get priced separately and openly rather than folded in quietly.
How to tell the igniter is what failed
Watch a start cycle through the sight glass with the basement lights off. The inducer runs, and somewhere between 15 and 40 seconds later the element should glow bright orange. No glow at all, with the inducer running normally, is the classic sign. A cracked element sometimes lights along one section and stays dark on the other, or glows briefly and dies before the gas arrives.
The confirmation is electrical. A healthy element shows continuity on a meter — a modest resistance reading across its two leads — and an open circuit means it is finished. That check takes a minute and is worth insisting on, because a furnace that will not light has several possible causes and only one of them is the igniter.
One caution about the cheap online route. A universal nitride kit is a good part, but it arrives with an assortment of brackets and ceramic wire connectors, and the element has to finish up in the same position in the burner flame path as the original. A centimetre out and the burners light late, which is exactly what shortens the life of the next one. That positioning, not the element, is most of what a technician is charging for.
How long should an igniter last?
There is no fixed lifespan, but an element that gives three to seven heating seasons is behaving normally, and one that fails twice inside two years is reporting a different problem. Count cycles rather than years. A furnace running long, steady burns in a well-matched house can go most of a decade on one element, while an oversized unit firing 10 times an hour on a mild November evening can get through two in a single season.
Why igniters fail early
- Short cycling. A furnace that starts and stops repeatedly puts several times the normal number of heat cycles through the element — why a furnace short-cycles explains the causes.
- An oversized furnace, which short-cycles by design. If yours barely manages 10 minutes at a stretch in January, read whether a furnace can be too big for the house.
- Bare fingers on the element. Skin oil leaves a hot spot that cracks the ceramic, which is why technicians handle these by the base only.
- Vibration, from a loose burner assembly or an unbalanced blower wheel shaking the cabinet.
- Rough power. Brownouts and hard restorations after an outage stress the element, and streets fed by overhead lines — much of Aldershot and Roseland — see more of those flickers in a summer storm than newer subdivisions with buried service.
Should you keep a spare igniter on the shelf?
On a furnace past 10 years old, a matching igniter sitting on a shelf beside it costs little and can turn a January no-heat night into a short visit. That does not make you the installer. The point is that the correct element is already in the house when a technician arrives at 11 at night, which matters most in a −20°C stretch when the whole region is phoning at once.
