How do I get my gas turned back on after Enbridge shuts it off?

Quick answer

To get your gas turned back on after Enbridge shuts it off, hire a TSSA-registered gas contractor to fix the fault named on the tag. Enbridge makes the house safe but does not repair your piping or appliances. Once the repair is tested and the clearance is sent to Enbridge, the technician relights the appliance, or Enbridge unlocks the meter.

Getting your gas turned back on after Enbridge shuts it off takes three things: a repair by a licensed gas contractor, a clearance sent to Enbridge, and a relight. Enbridge's part of a leak or carbon monoxide call ends once the house is safe. Everything downstream of the meter belongs to you, so the fix is yours to arrange, and the gas stays off until it is done.

What Enbridge does on a leak or CO call, and what it leaves for you

Enbridge makes safe and stops there. Its technician finds the source, then either closes the valve to the one appliance involved or shuts off and locks the meter if the leak is on the house piping or cannot be isolated. A warning tag is left that names the condition. Enbridge does not repair or service customer appliances or piping, which is the short answer to whether Enbridge fixes furnaces.

Check the tag for two things: where the gas was shut off (at the appliance or at the meter) and what was found. A valve closed at the furnace leaves the water heater and range working. A locked meter means no gas appliance in the house will run, and that includes hot water.

The steps to restore gas service

  • Read the tag and photograph both sides. The contractor needs the stated condition and the meter number.
  • Call a TSSA-registered gas contractor and ask for the technician's gas licence class when you book.
  • The technician repairs the fault: a leaking union or valve, a failed appliance part, a venting defect behind a CO reading.
  • The piping is tested. After a leak on house piping, expect a gas line pressure test with a gauge, then a leak check of every joint that was touched.
  • The technician completes the clearance section of the tag and sends it to Enbridge.
  • The gas comes back on. If only the appliance valve was closed, the technician reopens it and relights. If the meter is locked, Enbridge removes the lock, and each appliance is then relit and checked.

Do not turn the meter valve yourself, and do not cut a lock. Beyond being illegal, gas rushing into a house with open pilots and unlit appliances is how a small leak call becomes a large one. Every appliance has to be relit and watched through a full cycle: furnace, water heater, fireplace, range, dryer, pool heater and barbecue line.

Gas shut off for another reason? The path is different

Not every shut-off is a safety tag. If the gas was disconnected over an unpaid account, that is a billing matter settled with Enbridge's customer line. If Enbridge shut off a street or a block for its own repair, its staff restore service and relight appliances door to door. If a Type B warning tag expired without a clearance, the process is the one above; what a red tag means explains the deadline.

Keeping the house safe and the pipes from freezing while the gas is off

In winter the clock that matters is the indoor temperature, not the paperwork. A house with no furnace cools over hours, and water pipes in outside walls are at risk well before the rooms feel dangerous.

  • Heat with electric space heaters, one per 15-amp circuit, kept clear of bedding and curtains.
  • Never use the oven, a barbecue, a camp stove or a propane heater indoors. Those trade a no-heat problem for a carbon monoxide problem.
  • Shut the doors of rooms you are not using, and prop open the cabinets under any sink that sits on an outside wall.
  • Let a thin stream of water run at the tap farthest from the point where the water line enters the house.
  • If you have to leave the house overnight in a deep freeze, shut the main water valve and open the taps to drain the lines.

The full routine is in how to keep pipes from freezing when the furnace fails.

What the repair costs before the gas goes back on

The cost that is yours is the contractor's repair. A diagnostic visit runs $90–$150 and is credited toward the work if you proceed, and most furnace repairs come in between $150 and $800. A furnace gas valve is $500–$1,000. Piping repairs depend on how much pipe is exposed and how much sits behind finished walls, so that figure comes as a written quote after the technician has seen it.
