Red Tag Furnace Repair & Clearance

Red tag furnace repair and clearance means correcting the defect written on the warning tag, having a TSSA-licensed technician verify the fix, and reporting it to Enbridge Gas so the tag is lifted. Read the tag first: an immediate-hazard tag means gas to that appliance is already off and stays off until the repair is done, while the other kind lets the appliance run until the correction date printed on it. The diagnostic is $90–$150, and many tags clear with a repair, not a new furnace.

Reviewed by Zobir, licensed technician

A warning tag is a legal notice under Ontario's gas regulations, not a sales tool. A licensed gas technician or a utility inspector who finds an unacceptable condition has to issue one and report it to the gas distributor. Where the condition is an immediate hazard, the technician shuts off the gas to the appliance on the spot. Where it is not, the tag sets a fixed period to correct the defect, and the distributor cuts supply if that date passes without a clearance.

The same handful of defects produce most tags. On furnaces: a cracked heat exchanger, flue gas spilling into the room, venting that has separated, corroded or was never compliant, and gas leaks at the valve or the piping. On water heaters: spillage at the draft hood, a rusted or disconnected vent connector, and scorch marks from flame rollout. Missing clearances to combustibles and blocked combustion air turn up on both.

Clearing a tag takes three steps, in order. The defect is repaired by a TSSA-registered contractor; the technician re-inspects and tests the appliance, including a combustion analysis; and the clearance is reported to Enbridge Gas against the tag. If Enbridge locked the meter, its own crew restores supply once the clearance is on file. Do not remove the tag, reopen the valve or relight anything yourself.

You are free to have the finding checked. The company that wrote the tag does not own the repair, and if the defect is a cracked heat exchanger you were never shown, a furnace second opinion with camera photos is reasonable before you commit to anything. When the defect is confirmed, repair it when the fix is a part or a vent, and replace when it is a $1,500–$3,000 heat exchanger on a furnace past 15 years; the work itself is ordinary furnace repair. A tagged rental water heater is the rental company's equipment, so call them first.

What to do when an appliance is tagged

  • Read which kind of tag it is and note the correction date, the tag number and the defect written on it
  • Leave the gas valve and the tag exactly as the technician left them
  • Confirm working carbon monoxide alarms outside the bedrooms; if one sounds, leave the house and call from outside
  • With the furnace off in winter, heat with electric space heaters and never with the oven or a barbecue
  • Call a licensed contractor with the tag in hand so the right parts and test equipment come on the first visit

How it works

1. Call and read us the tag

Tag type, defect, date and the appliance's make and age. If the heat is off in freezing weather, say so; no-heat calls are scheduled ahead of routine work.

2. Verify and repair the defect

The technician confirms the condition with a camera, a combustion analyzer or a leak detector as the defect requires, quotes the fix in writing and repairs it. If the tag was written in error, the readings that show it go in the report.

3. Re-test and notify Enbridge Gas

The appliance is fired, tested and documented, and the clearance is sent to the distributor so the file is closed and supply is restored. Start with a call or a message.

Common questions

How long do I have to fix a red-tagged furnace?

It depends on the tag. With an immediate-hazard tag there is no grace period: the appliance is off now and stays off until it is repaired and cleared. With the other type, the deadline is the date written on the tag, and Enbridge Gas can shut off supply if no clearance is filed by then. More in what a red tag on a furnace means.

Can the company that tagged my furnace make me buy from them?

No. A tag obliges you to correct the defect, not to use a particular contractor. Any TSSA-registered contractor can make the repair and file the clearance. If the visit that produced the tag began as an uninvited knock on the door, Ontario's 2018 door-to-door sales rules may void a contract signed that day.

Is a red tag always a sign the furnace is finished?

No. Tags are written for separated vent pipes, blocked intakes, small gas leaks at a union and missing clearances, all of which are repairs. The tags that end in replacement are mostly heat exchangers on furnaces past 15 years, where a repair of that size is poor value against a new unit with a full warranty.

Can a tagged furnace be relit for one cold night?

Not if the tag is an immediate-hazard one. The gas was shut off because the technician judged the appliance unsafe to operate, and relighting it puts everyone in the house at risk of carbon monoxide or fire. Use electric heaters, let taps on outside walls drip in a deep freeze, and call the 24/7 line; an unsafe furnace in January is a no-heat emergency.

My water heater was tagged, not the furnace. Is the process different?

The steps are the same: repair, re-test, notify the distributor. The common water heater defects are spillage at the draft hood and a failed vent connector, both covered under water heater venting repair. On a rented tank the rental provider is responsible for the fix, so phone them before paying anyone.
