What Is an Inducer Motor?

An inducer motor, also called a draft inducer, is a small fan in a gas furnace that starts before the burners light, pulling combustion air through the heat exchanger and pushing the flue gases out through the vent.

In short

An inducer motor is the small fan that starts first on every heating call, drawing combustion air through the heat exchanger and pushing exhaust out the vent. If it hums, grinds or fails to prove draft, the pressure switch keeps the burners from lighting. Replacement typically runs $400–$900 installed in the GTA; check for a blocked vent first.

The first sound a gas furnace makes on a call for heat is a small fan spinning up beside the burner compartment, and that fan is the inducer motor. Nothing else in the heating sequence happens until it has proven the vent is clear.

What an inducer motor does in the start-up sequence

The inducer creates the draft that the burners need and the control board insists on. The sequence runs in a fixed order:

  • The thermostat calls for heat.
  • The control board starts the inducer.
  • The pressure switch closes, proving that air is moving through the heat exchanger and vent.
  • The igniter heats, the gas valve opens and the burners light.
  • The inducer keeps running for the whole burn and for a short purge afterward.

Every mid- and high-efficiency furnace sold in Ontario has one. On a condensing furnace it sits in a plastic housing that also collects condensate, so the same part handles exhaust and water.

How an inducer motor fails and what you will hear

An inducer usually announces its failure with noise before it stops. Match the symptom:

  • Humming without spinning: seized bearings or a failed motor
  • Grinding, squealing or rattling at start-up: worn bearings or a loose fan wheel
  • Inducer runs but the board shows a pressure-switch fault code: a weak inducer, a blocked vent or a plugged condensate drain
  • Inducer runs and the furnace never reaches ignition: draft is not being proven
  • Water dripping from the inducer housing: a cracked housing, a failed gasket or a blocked drain

Winter adds a cause that is not the motor at all. Sidewall vents that ice up or drift over make the inducer push against a blocked pipe, so clear the terminations outside first; what to do if the furnace vent is blocked by snow has the steps. The flash code on the board narrows it down, and our Carrier furnace error codes and Goodman furnace error codes guides list the draft-related ones.

A furnace with a failed inducer is safe but cold: it will not light without proven draft. Never bypass the pressure switch to force it.

What an inducer motor replacement costs in Ontario

An inducer is a mid-priced furnace repair.

  • Diagnostic visit: $90–$150, credited toward the repair
  • Draft inducer motor replacement: $400–$900 installed

The spread comes from the part. Some furnaces take a bare motor, while many condensing models need the complete assembly with housing and gasket. On a furnace old enough that other parts are close behind, a good technician says so before you spend the money.

When to call for inducer motor repair

Call when the furnace hums and stops, shows a pressure-switch code after the vent is confirmed clear, or leaks at the inducer. Inducer diagnosis and replacement are part of our furnace repair service across Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton and the west GTA. Contact ZK Mechanical or phone (647) 801-1252 with the furnace brand and the flash code.

Questions people ask about Inducer motor

Can I run my furnace with a bad inducer motor?

No, and the furnace will not let you. If the inducer cannot prove draft, the pressure switch stays open and the control board refuses to open the gas valve. A noisy inducer that still works will heat the house for now, but it can stop without warning, so book the repair before a cold snap, not during one.

Why does my inducer motor run but the furnace does not ignite?

The board is waiting for the pressure switch to close. A blocked intake or exhaust, a plugged condensate trap, a cracked or water-filled pressure hose or a weak inducer wheel can each keep it open. If the switch does close and there is still no flame, the fault has moved downstream to the igniter or the gas valve.

Is the inducer motor the same as the blower motor?

No. The inducer is a small fan that moves combustion gases through the heat exchanger and out the vent; it never touches household air. The blower is the large fan in the blower compartment that pushes house air across the heat exchanger and through the ducts. A furnace needs both, and they fail with different symptoms.
