Ruud Furnace & AC Repair, Installation & Warranty

Ruud furnace and AC repair, installation and warranty work all turn on one fact: a Ruud is a Rheem with a different badge, built by the same manufacturer and fixed with the same parts. ZK Mechanical services Ruud equipment across Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton, Caledon and the west side of Toronto. Most Ruud repairs cost $150–$800, after a $90–$150 diagnostic that is credited to the job when you approve it.

Technician looking over a gas furnace

Ruud and Rheem are sister brands from one manufacturer, Rheem Manufacturing. The model numbers show it: a Ruud U96V is the Rheem R96V and a Ruud U95T is the Rheem R95T, with only the first letter changed. The same swap holds outdoors, where a Ruud condenser whose model starts UA lines up with a Rheem that starts RA.

That matters on a no-heat call because Ruud parts are ordered by Rheem part number. A technician who knows the Rheem platform already knows your Ruud, and the wholesaler does not need a Ruud-labelled box on the shelf. Our Rheem furnace, AC and water heater page is the sister reference for anything not covered here, including Ruud-badged water heaters.

Ruud's condensing furnaces are sound machines with sensible diagnostics, and they are strict about water. The control shuts the burner down before condensate can back up into the cabinet, so the first cold snap of the season produces Ruud no-heat calls that are really drain problems. In rural Caledon, where gas mains do not reach every lot, a Ruud may be running on propane through a conversion kit; say so when you call, because the orifices and gas pressures are different.

ZK Mechanical is an independent, owner-operated contractor and is not part of Ruud's dealer network. We service the furnace that is already in your basement and write the price down before a panel comes off. Our rule on older units: when a repair costs more than half of a new furnace and the Ruud is past 15 years, we quote both and let you choose.

Ruud lines we install and service

Ultra Series furnaces (U96V, U97V, U98V)

The variable-speed condensing furnaces: the two-stage U96V and the modulating U97V and U98V, twins of the Rheem R96V, R97V and R98V. A two-digit code on the control board's 7-segment display reports faults, which makes these quicker to diagnose than a furnace that only blinks a light.

Achiever Series furnaces (U95T and relatives)

Single-stage condensing furnaces with a constant-torque blower, the counterpart of the Rheem R95T. One firing rate means you hear every start, but there is less to go wrong and every wear part is an ordinary Rheem item. All of them meet the 95% AFUE federal minimum for a new gas furnace in Canada.

Endeavor Line air conditioners and heat pumps

Ruud's outdoor units, sold in Achiever, Achiever Plus and Ultra tiers. Air conditioner models begin UA and heat pumps begin UP, matching Rheem's RA and RP units. Capacitors, contactors and fan motors are common stock; inverter boards on the variable-speed Ultra units are ordered by model and serial number.

EcoNet controls

The communicating thermostat and app that tie Ultra-tier equipment together. EcoNet is optional: the furnace still runs and stages on conventional thermostat wiring. When an EcoNet system reports a fault, we check the low-voltage wiring between the units before blaming a board.

Older Ruud furnaces

Ruud furnaces built before the U-series carry longer model numbers beginning UG, the counterpart of Rheem's RG models, and many use a hot-surface igniter. We service them. Past 20 years, control boards and inducer assemblies become order-in parts, and the half-the-cost rule starts to decide things.

What goes wrong on Ruud equipment

Ignition lockout: dirty flame sensor or failed igniter

The burner lights for a few seconds and drops out, or never lights, and after its allowed tries the control locks out. The two-digit code on the 7-segment display tells the technician which happened: flame that lit but was not proven points to the flame sensor, no flame at all points to the igniter or the gas supply. Cleaning or replacing the sensor is $150–$300 and a new igniter is $200–$450. Current U-series furnaces light with a direct-spark igniter and many older Ruud models with a hot-surface igniter that cracks with age; neither kind is repaired, both are replaced.

Pressure switch fault on a 90%+ model: plugged condensate trap

On a condensing Ruud the inducer starts, the pressure switch never proves draft, and the display shows a pressure switch code. After the first cold snap the usual cause is a condensate trap or drain line plugged with scale, which leaves water standing where air should move. Clearing the trap and drain is $150–$350; a pressure switch that has itself failed is $250–$500. These furnaces also carry a blocked-drain sensor, so a furnace that stops with a dry floor around it is doing its job, not hiding a leak.

Inducer motor that hums, rattles or will not start

The draft inducer runs before every burner cycle and its bearings wear first. A rattle at start-up or a hum with no airflow means the motor is on its way out, and the furnace will not light without it. Replacement is $400–$900 depending on the assembly. We order it by the Rheem part number on the housing, not by the Ruud model name, because that is how the counter stocks it.

Ruud condenser hums but the fan and compressor stay off

On a hot afternoon the outdoor unit buzzes and nothing turns. A failed run capacitor or a pitted contactor is the usual cause, $150–$350 either way and normally a one-visit AC repair. Shut the system off at the thermostat until it is fixed, because a compressor that keeps trying to start against a dead capacitor overheats.

Ruud warranty: what to know

  • Ruud's warranty is Rheem's warranty. The manufacturer covers parts by model and serial number, so read both off the rating plate inside the burner compartment before you call anyone.
  • Parts are covered and labour is not. A successful claim gets you the component; the diagnostic and the time to fit it are billed unless your installer sold you a separate labour plan in writing.
  • Registration changes the term. Rheem and Ruud publish a longer parts term for registered equipment, ten years on current residential models, and ask for registration within 90 days of installation. The certificate issued for your serial number is the document that counts, so check it before assuming.
  • Heat exchanger coverage is a separate and longer line on the same certificate. It covers the exchanger itself, not the labour to change it.
  • Claims are put at risk by an installation without a licensed gas technician's name on it and by years with no service record. See what voids a furnace warranty and keep every invoice with the manual.

Parts availability in the GTA

Ruud parts are Rheem parts, and that is the reason a Ruud is easy to keep running here. Igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, capacitors and contactors are ordinary counter stock at HVAC wholesalers across the GTA and Hamilton, so a routine breakdown is normally fixed on the first visit. Control boards and inducer assemblies are ordered against the Rheem part number, and the modulating gas valves and variable-speed blower motors on Ultra furnaces take longer than the simple parts on an Achiever. We confirm that a part exists before we quote it, and if your Ruud is under warranty we will tell you whether a claim is worth the wait or whether buying the part outright gets the heat back sooner.

Common questions

Is a Ruud furnace the same as a Rheem furnace?

Yes, in every way that matters for a repair. Both brands come from Rheem Manufacturing, a Ruud U96V and a Rheem R96V share the cabinet, control board and burner assembly, and parts are ordered by the same Rheem part numbers. The badge and the first letter of the model number are the differences. A technician who works on Rheem equipment is already working on Ruud.

Do I need a Ruud dealer for warranty repairs?

No. Any TSSA-licensed gas technician can legally service a Ruud furnace in Ontario, and the parts warranty stays with the equipment and its serial number. What differs is how the claim is processed through the distributor. We tell you up front whether the part is likely covered, and you still pay for the diagnostic and labour either way.

What does the two-digit code on my Ruud furnace mean?

It is the control board telling you which safety stopped the burner: ignition, flame sensing, pressure switch, limit or blower. The legend is printed on the label inside the furnace door, and that label wins over any list online because codes vary by model. Write the number down before you cut power, then compare it with our Rheem furnace error codes guide, which covers the shared platform.

Is it safe to keep resetting a Ruud furnace that locks out?

Reset it once, and if the furnace locks out again, leave it off and call. Repeated resets push unburned gas through a burner that is failing to light and hide the stored code a technician needs. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call from outside. Ontario requires working CO alarms in homes with fuel-burning appliances.

What does a new Ruud furnace cost installed?

A high-efficiency furnace installed in the GTA runs $4,500–$7,500, with a single-stage Achiever near the bottom of the band and a modulating Ultra near the top. Venting, sheet metal and gas-line changes move the number more than the badge does. Replacing the air conditioner on the same visit typically brings the total to $7,500–$11,500. Our pricing page lists the bands, and every quote is free and in writing.
