What does 7 red flashes mean on a York furnace?

Reviewed by Zobir, licensed technician

Quick answer

7 red flashes on a York furnace means flame could not be established during three trials for ignition. The control locks out for 1 hour with no heat, then restarts. Check that the gas supply to the furnace is on and cycle the power once. If the code repeats, the ignitor, flame sensor and gas pressure need testing. Any gas smell: leave and call Enbridge Gas.

7 red flashes on a York furnace means the control tried to light the burners three times and could not establish flame. After the third failed trial for ignition it locks out for 1 hour, then restarts the sequence without anyone touching it. That hourly rhythm is the signature of this code: a York that tries, fails, sits for an hour and tries again all night is on 7 red flashes.

Is it safe to leave a York furnace cycling on 7 red flashes?

The lockout itself is safe: the control closes the gas valve and waits. The cost is heat. There is none during the hour, and if the cause is still present the next three trials fail too and the house keeps cooling.

Smell is the line. If you can smell gas in the basement or at the furnace, do not reset anything: leave the house and call Enbridge Gas from outside. Why a furnace smells like gas explains the difference between a whiff at ignition and a leak.

The safe homeowner check: gas supply first, then one power cycle

  • Confirm the manual gas valve on the line to the furnace is open: handle parallel to the pipe is on, handle at right angles is off.
  • Light a burner on the gas range or check the water heater. If nothing in the house has gas, the supply is the issue, and on a propane property the next stop is the tank gauge.
  • Cycle the furnace power switch off and on once. That restarts the ignition sequence without waiting out the hour.
  • Watch the start through the burner sight glass and note what happens. No glow, a glow with no flame, and a flame that lights and dies are three different faults, and telling the technician which one you saw saves time.
  • Leave the switch on the furnace's own gas valve to a technician. York's manual lists that switch being off as a cause, but it sits inside the burner compartment.

Causes of failed ignition on a York, in the order worth checking

  • The gas valve switch is off. The valve inside the furnace has its own on/off switch, and it can be left off after service.
  • Low or no gas pressure. A closed shut-off, a supply interruption or a regulator problem leaves the burners with too little gas to light.
  • A dirty or faulty flame sensor. The burners light, the sensor fails to prove flame, and the control shuts the gas within seconds and counts a failed trial. Cleaning or replacement is $150–$300.
  • A faulty hot-surface ignitor. It no longer gets hot enough to light the gas, or it has cracked and does not glow. Replacement is $200–$450.
  • Loose wires. A connector at the ignitor, the sensor or the gas valve that has worked loose interrupts the sequence.
  • A burner problem. Rust, debris or misaligned burners keep the flame from carrying across to the sensor.
  • A faulty gas valve. The valve receives its signal and does not open, and a new one is $500–$1,000 installed.

What a gas technician tests when 7 red flashes repeats

A repeat code calls for measurements, because guessing at parts is the expensive way to fix an ignition fault. The technician checks inlet and manifold gas pressure with a manometer, measures the ignitor's resistance and the voltage reaching it, and reads the flame signal while the burners are lit. Burners are pulled and cleaned if the flame does not carry across. All of it is gas-side work for a technician holding a TSSA licence.

The diagnostic is $90–$150 and comes off the repair when you proceed. Common ignition fixes such as a flame sensor or an ignitor fall in the $150–$450 band, and you see the price before the work is done.

A York locked out overnight: when to use the emergency line

Because this control retries every hour, a single lockout on a mild day can wait for a booked visit. A lockout that repeats through a night below freezing should not: a house without heat for many hours risks frozen pipes, and older, leakier houses cool fastest. How long a furnace lockout lasts explains what the control is doing in the meantime.
