Quick answer
An air conditioner gets loud for a reason you can usually name by the sound. Buzzing points to a failing capacitor or contactor, rattling to loose panels or fan blades, grinding or squealing to worn fan motor bearings, hissing to a refrigerant leak, and a hard bang at start-up to a struggling compressor. New noises deserve a look before the next heat wave, when small parts become big repairs.
If you're wondering why your air conditioner is so loud, the useful question is whether it got louder or was always this way. A 1990s single-stage condenser is loud by design; a unit that developed a new rattle, buzz or scream in the past month has a part on its way out. The noises below are the second kind, sorted by what you hear and where you hear it.
Match the noise to the part
- Buzzing from the outdoor unit: a contactor chattering or a capacitor losing its charge. Both are small parts, and both leave the compressor straining until they are replaced. The capacitor side is covered in what an AC capacitor costs.
- Rattling or clattering: a loose access panel, a screw backing out of the fan guard, or a twig or maple key that fell through the top grille and is hitting the fan blade. Shut the unit off and look before assuming the worst.
- Grinding, squealing or a metallic scream: the condenser fan motor bearings are dry or the motor is seizing. It gets louder on hot afternoons as the bearings heat up. A replacement motor is $300–$700 depending on the type.
- Hissing or bubbling: refrigerant escaping at a joint or through a pinhole in the coil. A faint hiss for a few seconds at shutdown is normal pressure equalization; a continuous hiss is not.
- A hard bang or thud at start-up: the compressor is starting under load, often because the capacitor is weak. Repeated hard starts shorten compressor life, and the compressor is the one part in the outdoor unit that costs more to replace than the whole unit is sometimes worth.
- Clicking that repeats without the unit starting: the control relay is pulling in and dropping out. That is a low-voltage or contactor fault, not a compressor fault.
Vibration noise is a mounting problem, not a mechanical one
A condenser that hums through the house wall is usually transmitting vibration, not making more of it. The clay soils common across Halton heave in spring and settle in dry summers, and a concrete pad that has tipped a few degrees over 20 years lets the whole cabinet rock. A re-levelled pad, or an elevated stand that lifts the unit clear of the ground and the snow line, stops most of it.
The other path is the copper line set. Where it passes through the rim joist into a 1950s–60s bungalow in Aldershot or Roseland it was often set tight against the framing, and the compressor's vibration rides the copper straight into the floor above. Rubber isolation grommets at the wall and a foam sleeve on the line are a small job that makes a large difference.
Noise from inside the house is a different diagnosis
A whoosh or roar at the return grille when the AC runs means the blower is moving air through a return that is too small, which is common in 1970s–90s subdivisions where a single basement return was expected to serve the whole house. Squealing or thumping at the furnace is the blower itself, and that belongs to why a furnace makes loud noises because it happens in both seasons. Ticking in the ductwork as it cools is sheet metal contracting and is harmless.
A healthy unit can still be too loud for a narrow side yard
Every condenser has a published sound rating in decibels on its spec sheet, and modern variable-speed units are rated markedly quieter than the single-stage units of the 1990s. That matters on the narrow side yards in Alton Village and Joshua Creek, where your condenser may sit a metre from a neighbour's bedroom window. When loud means replace
A compressor that knocks or grinds on a unit past 12 years old, or one that still uses R-22 refrigerant, is rarely worth opening up. Fan motors and capacitors are worth fixing at almost any age.
