Do not dry it out and restart it. Once water reaches the burners, gas valve, control board or blower motor, the furnace is finished — licensed technicians will not return submerged gas controls to service. Stay out of a flooded basement with live power, shut the gas at the appliance valve if you can reach it safely, and photograph everything for the claim.
If your furnace was flooded, the short answer is that it does not get dried out and put back into service. Once water has reached the burner compartment, the gas valve, the control board or the blower motor, that unit is done — and the safety problem in the room comes before the equipment problem. Standing water, live electrical circuits and a gas appliance are the combination that hurts people during a cleanup.
Before you go down the stairs
- If water is touching outlets, cords, the electrical panel or the furnace itself, do not step into it. Water and live circuits give no warning.
- Shut the power at the main breaker only if the panel is dry, well above the water, and you can reach it standing somewhere dry. Otherwise call your utility — Burlington Hydro, Oakville Hydro, or Alectra in Hamilton — and have the service disconnected.

Why a soaked furnace is replaced rather than repaired
This is not caution for its own sake. A gas valve that has been submerged can no longer be trusted to close, and manufacturers do not authorize returning wet gas controls, circuit boards or safety switches to service — cleaning them is not an approved repair. The blower motor's bearings and windings, the inducer, the igniter and the flame sensor all take water badly. Burners and the heat exchanger rust from the inside where nobody can see, and the insulation lining the cabinet wicks up water and silt and never genuinely dries.
The rest of the mechanical room needs the same scrutiny. A water heater whose burner compartment went under is replaced for identical reasons. An outdoor condenser that was submerged needs its compressor, contactor and wiring assessed before anyone energizes it. The evaporator coil sitting on top of the furnace usually rides high enough to survive and can often be reused, but the condensate drain, the pump, and any ductwork below the water line will need cleaning or replacement, because silt in a return duct or a floor boot does not stay put once a blower runs.
Why this keeps happening in Burlington and Hamilton basements
