Warehouse and industrial heating and cooling is a stratification problem before it is an equipment problem. Heat collects against the underside of the roof deck, the slab where people actually work stays cold, and the thermostat mounted at eye level on a column reads something in between and reports that everything is fine. We heat, ventilate and spot-cool warehouses, shops and light-industrial buildings, and we start by finding out what the air is doing between the floor and the roof.
In a building with 8 to 10 metres of clear height, the difference between the floor and the top of the racking on a January morning can be enormous, and every degree of that gradient is heat you paid for sitting where nobody benefits from it. Three things change it. Move the thermostat to working height on an interior column away from a door. Push the warm layer back down with destratification or high-volume low-speed fans, which usually pays for itself faster than any equipment swap. And where people stand in fixed spots — a packing bench, a welding bay, a shipping desk — heat the surfaces rather than the air, which is what an infrared tube heater does: it warms the floor, the bench and the person, and the air catches up afterwards.
Dock doors are the other half of the story. A door that goes up for ten minutes at −8°C empties the shipping end of the building of everything the unit heaters just produced, and no amount of extra burner capacity wins that fight cleanly. What works is heating shipping as its own zone with its own control, adding air curtains or dock seals at the doors that cycle most, and getting the door schedule looked at honestly — in most shipping areas a couple of doors are doing the large majority of the openings. The same building pressure logic applies to process exhaust: a welding bay fan, a paint area or a dust collector all move large volumes outdoors, and if nothing brings replacement air in, the fans strain, the doors whistle, and gas appliances can back-draft. Every exhaust fan needs a make-up air path, and on a gas-heated building that is a safety item, not a comfort one.
The mezzanine office is the third recurring conflict. The shop floor may need heat and nothing else nine months a year, while an office box built above it — sitting in the warmest air in the building, full of people and computers — needs cooling almost year-round. Running one system for both never satisfies either. A small ductless or ducted split system dedicated to the mezzanine, with its own thermostat, is the standard answer, and it means the shop is not being cooled to keep an office comfortable. Equipment we install and service
Suspended heaters distributed across the space for general warmth, usually the backbone of a warehouse heating system. Burners, flame safeguards, venting and the fan need annual testing, and dusty buildings need the burner compartment cleaned or the unit starts nuisance-locking out.
Radiant heat aimed at floors, benches and people rather than at the air above them. They suit high-bay space and areas near doors, because a door opening carries away air but does not carry away the warmth already stored in the slab and the equipment.
Replacement air for welding extraction, paint areas, dust collection and general exhaust. Sized to what the fans actually move, tempered so it does not freeze the shipping end, and interlocked so supply runs whenever exhaust does.
Fans that return the warm ceiling layer to the working level, and a dedicated split or ductless system for the office box on the mezzanine so the two very different loads stop fighting over one thermostat.
What goes wrong in these buildings
- It is barely 4°C at the packing bench and warm enough at the mezzanine railing to open a window.
- Every time the dock door goes up in January we lose the whole morning's heat.
- One unit heater has been locked out since last winter and nobody noticed until it got cold.
- The mezzanine office wants air conditioning nine months a year and the shop floor never does.
- We cannot shut the plant down for a day in the middle of the season to change equipment.
- The welding bay smells, and turning the exhaust fan up just makes the man doors whistle.
How it works
Clear heights, door count and door use, occupied work areas, every exhaust fan, and the age and condition of every existing heater. Floor-to-ceiling temperature readings on a cold day tell us more than any drawing.
Radiant where people stand still, unit heaters for general space, a separate zone for shipping, and nothing wasted on aisles nobody occupies. Zoning a warehouse properly usually reduces the total capacity needed.
Every fan that removes air gets a path for air to return, tempered where the volume is large enough to matter. This is where a plant gets safer and more comfortable in the same visit.
Common questions
Radiant tube heaters or gas unit heaters for a shop?
Both, usually. Unit heaters are the cost-effective way to bring general space up and are easy to service, while radiant tube heaters win where people work in fixed positions, near frequently opened doors, or under very high ceilings, because they warm surfaces instead of air that immediately rises. A common layout is unit heaters for the bulk of the floor plus radiant over the benches and the shipping area.
Does a warehouse in Ontario need air conditioning?
Whole-building cooling is rarely worth it and rarely what people actually want. What is usually needed is cooling for the offices and mezzanine, spot cooling or high-volume fans over specific workstations, and temperature control for any stock, electronics or finishing process that is genuinely heat-sensitive. We would rather cool three areas properly than cool a whole building poorly.
Can you service unit heaters mounted high above the floor?
Yes — that is normal work, done from a lift with the aisle below coned off, and it is far easier to arrange in September than in the middle of a cold snap. Suspended heaters get neglected precisely because reaching them is a job in itself, which is why a scheduled annual visit that does all of them at once is worth more here than in almost any other building type.
How do we stop losing so much heat through the dock doors?
Treat shipping as its own zone with its own control, so the rest of the plant is not chasing the losses. Then reduce the losses themselves with dock seals, air curtains on the busiest openings, and a look at whether doors are being left up out of habit. Radiant heat in that zone recovers far faster after an opening than warm air ever will.
