In short
No residential program in Ontario pays for a gas boiler replacement in 2026. The Home Renovation Savings Program has no boiler measure, and Enbridge's Home Efficiency Rebate stopped taking applicants in January 2025. Boiler-heated homes can claim the heat pump rebate instead: $500 per ton up to $2,000 with gas heat, or $1,250 per ton up to $7,500 with oil, propane or electric heat.
How much you can get
- Gas boiler replaced with a new gas boiler (residential) No rebate in any current program
- Cold-climate air-source heat pump added to a home heated by a gas boiler $500 per ton, up to $2,000
- Cold-climate air-source heat pump, boiler on oil, propane or electricity $1,250 per ton, up to $7,500
- Ground-source heat pump, gas-heated home $3,000
- Ground-source heat pump, other heating fuels $2,000 per ton, up to $12,000
- Insulation, air sealing, windows and doors (with a home energy assessment) See the program page
- Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Ended intake January 27, 2025
- Commercial boiler plant Not on Enbridge's prescriptive list; custom projects by pre-approval only
Who qualifies
- For the heat pump rebate, you own the home; a landlord applies where the house is tenanted.
- You hold an active Enbridge Gas residential account and heat primarily with a natural gas furnace or boiler, which places you in the $500 per ton tier.
- Or the home is on the Ontario electricity grid and heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood, which places you in the $1,250 per ton tier.
- The house is single detached, semi-detached, a row house or townhome, or a mobile home on a permanent foundation.
- The air-source model is active on Natural Resources Canada's cold-climate qualified products list.
- A water-to-water ground-source unit must be on the ENERGY STAR geothermal heat pump list and available in Canada.
- A participating HVAC contractor files the pre-installation application, and it is approved before the equipment goes in.
If a salesperson has put a boiler rebate on your quote, ask which program it comes from and look for it on that program's own site. We could not find one on October 1, 2026. Here is what we checked, and what a radiator-heated house can use instead.
Is there a rebate for a new gas boiler in Ontario in 2026?
No. Each place a residential boiler rebate used to live, or might be expected to, comes up empty.
- Home Renovation Savings Program: the measure list has no boiler, furnace or gas water heater replacement.
- Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate: ended intake on January 27, 2025.
- Home Efficiency Rebate Plus, delivered with the Canada Greener Homes Grant: closed to new applicants in February 2024.
- Enbridge Home Winterproofing Program: free insulation and draft proofing for income-qualified homes, with no boiler replacement listed.
That changes the repair-or-replace decision in a useful way. Because no rebate is waiting, there is none to lose by repairing a sound boiler and running it a few more winters. Replace it when it is unsafe, when the heat exchanger leaks, or when a repair costs more than half of a new boiler on a condensing unit past 15 years or a cast-iron one past 25.
Heat pump rebates a boiler-heated home can claim
The program's eligibility wording names boilers directly: an Enbridge Gas customer who primarily heats with a natural gas furnace or boiler qualifies for the heat pump rebate. The house does not need ducts, and nothing on the program's heat pump page requires the boiler to come out.
- Ductless cold-climate air-source heat pump: one to four indoor heads carry spring and fall and add cooling, while the boiler and radiators handle deep cold. Paid at $500 per ton up to $2,000 in a gas-heated home.
- Ground-source water-to-water heat pump: the type that can feed a hydronic system. The program pays $3,000 in a gas-heated home and requires the model to be on the ENERGY STAR geothermal list.
- Air-to-water heat pump: the program page names air-source and ground-source units and does not name air-to-water. Eligibility turns on whether the exact model is on the Natural Resources Canada cold-climate list, so get that confirmed in writing before ordering.
The per-ton figure is calculated on the unit's minimum rated heating capacity at 8.3 °C, not on the nameplate cooling size. The design question is covered in can a heat pump replace a boiler.
Hamilton and Dundas radiator homes: what the numbers look like
The pre-war brick houses in Dundas and lower-city Hamilton were built around cast-iron radiators and have no ductwork, so the heat pump that fits is ductless. Enbridge Gas serves these neighbourhoods, which puts them in the lower rebate tier.
- Single-zone ductless: $4,000–$7,000 installed.
- Dual-zone ductless: $7,500–$11,000 installed.
- Three to four zones: $10,000–$16,000+ installed.
- Cold-climate models: roughly $500–$1,500 more per zone.
- Rebate in a gas-heated home: $500 per ton, to a maximum of $2,000.
Those radiators are also why a straight swap to an air-to-water heat pump is hard in these houses. Cast-iron radiators sized for water near 80 °C give off far less heat at the 45–55 °C a heat pump prefers, so the heat-loss calculation has to come first. Rural Flamborough homes with oil or propane boilers sit in the higher tier and are worth a closer look for that reason.
What a new boiler costs when there is no rebate
We do not publish a boiler replacement range, because the spread is too wide to be honest. A cast-iron boiler on an existing chimney, a wall-hung condensing boiler with new venting, and a combi that also replaces the water heater are three different jobs. The price is driven by:
- Boiler type and output, set by a heat-loss calculation and not by the old nameplate.
- Venting: a condensing boiler needs new sealed venting and a condensate drain.
- Near-boiler piping, circulators, the expansion tank and air separation, which are often replaced with it.
- Gas line sizing, and the condition of the existing radiators and valves.
A diagnostic visit is $90–$150, folded into the repair if you proceed, and a replacement price comes as a written quote. Gas boiler work in Ontario has to be done by a TSSA-licensed gas technician.
For a boiler that is down now, start with boiler repair, or boiler repair in Hamilton for the lower city, Dundas and the Mountain. The full program list is on the Ontario rebates hub, the heat pump rules are on the Home Renovation Savings Program page, and you can book a visit here.
How ZK Mechanical helps
- Tell you first whether the boiler is worth repairing, since no rebate is pushing you to replace it.
- Run the heat-loss calculation and check radiator output before recommending any heat pump.
- Confirm the exact heat pump model against the Natural Resources Canada list and file the pre-installation application.
- Set the changeover temperature so the boiler takes over only when the heat pump can no longer keep up.
- Service cast-iron and condensing boilers with TSSA-licensed gas technicians.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a rebate for a combi boiler?
No. A combi boiler is a gas appliance that heats the house and the domestic hot water, and the Home Renovation Savings Program has no measure for a gas boiler or a gas water heater of any kind. The program's water heating measure is the heat pump water heater, and its space heating measure is the heat pump.
Does keeping my gas boiler disqualify me from the heat pump rebate?
Nothing on the program's heat pump page says so. Eligibility is written around how the home is heated now, a natural gas furnace or boiler, and the page sets no requirement to remove it. Your tier follows that fuel: $500 per ton to a maximum of $2,000. Have the contractor confirm it on the pre-installation application.
Are oil boilers treated differently?
Yes. A home heated with oil is in the higher tier of the heat pump rebate, $1,250 per ton up to $7,500. Separately, Save on Energy's Energy Affordability Program lists a no-cost cold-climate heat pump for income-eligible homeowners with oil heat and above-ground tanks, and describes that offer as available for a limited time.
Is there a rebate for boilers in commercial or apartment buildings?
Enbridge's 2026 Prescriptive Incentive Program for businesses has no boiler measure on its published list. Its Commercial Custom Retrofit Program assesses projects on the natural gas saved and requires pre-approval, with eligibility confirmed by an Energy Solutions Advisor. Contact an advisor before ordering equipment, because a boiler bought first cannot be pre-approved afterward.
Should I wait for a boiler rebate to come back?
We know of no announced program that would pay for a residential gas boiler, and the current provincial program is built around heat pumps and the building envelope. A boiler that is leaking, short-cycling on a safety or failing a combustion test should not be nursed through a winter on the chance of one. Decide on the condition of the boiler.
