Bronte started as a fishing and shipbuilding village in the 1830s at the mouth of Bronte Creek — Twelve Mile Creek on the old surveys — and the street grid south of Lakeshore Road West still carries that scale. Many of the original cottages and 1950s–60s bungalows, though, have been torn down and replaced by large custom homes with open plans, walls of glass facing the lake, radiant floors and two or three zones of heating and cooling. Being right on the lake changes the loads. Summer afternoons in Bronte run cooler than north Oakville because of the lake breeze, but the air is heavy with moisture, so cooling here is more a humidity problem than a temperature problem — sizing an air conditioner for lakefront humidity is a different calculation, and an oversized unit that short-cycles leaves a glass-walled rebuild feeling clammy. Winter brings wind straight off the open water onto the lakefront, which pushes up heat loss through all that glass and is hard on outdoor equipment — we mount condensers and heat pumps on stands, keep them off the exposed lake side of the house where there is a choice, and check the coils each spring for the corrosion that constant lake moisture leaves behind. Oakville Hydro is the electrical utility, Enbridge supplies the gas, and any permit for new venting, a gas-line upsize or an addition goes through the Town of Oakville's building department.
