Lennox vs Trane is a closer contest than either brochure admits: tier for tier the two build comparable furnaces and air conditioners, and for an Ontario house the decision usually turns on which model is written on the quote, who installs it, and how a part reaches your door in year twelve. Our verdict: at the entry and middle tiers it is a tie, so buy the better installer. At the top, Lennox has the edge on paper, with a modulating furnace rated up to 99% AFUE against Trane's 97.3%, in exchange for deeper commitment to one brand's thermostat and parts.

Tier for Tier: Merit, Elite and Signature Against XR, XL and XV

Both brands sell three tiers, and the tiers line up closely. The one trap is that Trane's XR, XL and XV badges belong to outdoor units; Trane furnaces carry S-series and XC model names instead.

  • Entry: Lennox Merit (model numbers starting ML, such as the single-stage ML196E furnace at up to 96% AFUE) against Trane XR outdoor units and the single-stage S9X1 furnace at up to 96%.
  • Middle: Lennox Elite (EL prefix, including the two-stage variable-speed EL296V and EL297V furnaces) against Trane XL outdoor units and the two-stage S9X2 and S9V2 furnaces.
  • Top: the Dave Lennox Signature Collection (SL prefix: the modulating SLP99V furnace and the variable-capacity SL25KCV air conditioner) against Trane XV variable-speed outdoor units and the modulating XC95m furnace.

The edges overlap. Lennox now lists a two-stage furnace and a two-stage air conditioner inside Merit, and variable-capacity air conditioners inside Elite. Our breakdowns of Lennox Merit vs Elite vs Signature and Trane XR vs XL vs XV go model by model.

Which Tier a Typical Quote Is Actually Pricing

A quote that shows a brand name and one price is usually pricing the entry or middle tier, not the unit in the brochure photo. Find the model number before you compare anything. ML or S9X1 means entry; EL, S9X2 or S9V2 means middle; SL, XC95m or an XV outdoor unit means top.

If a Lennox quote and a Trane quote are far apart, check that they are the same tier before you conclude one brand is expensive. A Merit furnace against an XV system is not a brand comparison; it is a single-stage furnace against a variable-speed one.

  • New high-efficiency furnace, either brand, standard replacement: $4,300–$7,000 installed across the GTA
  • Where most two-stage replacements cluster: $4,500–$6,500
  • Top-tier models such as the Lennox Signature furnace or the Trane S9V2: typically $500–$1,500 over an equivalent value-brand furnace
  • Furnace and air conditioner replaced together: typically $7,500–$11,500

Venting changes, a chimney liner or gas-line work sit outside those bands for both brands. The pricing page shows the full published ranges.

Parts Supply in the GTA: What Happens After Year 10

Parts access, not build quality, is where owners feel the difference between these brands a decade in. Lennox sells its parts through Lennox Stores, the company's own counters, which are open to licensed HVAC contractors. Many Lennox components are specific to Lennox, so the part comes from that counter or it is ordered.

Trane's brand-specific parts also come through Trane's own parts channel, not off a general wholesaler's shelf. For either brand the practical question is the same: how far is your installer from the counter that stocks the part, and do they keep the common boards on the truck?

  • Wear parts that fail most often (hot surface igniter, flame sensor, capacitor, pressure switch): normally a one-visit repair on either brand.
  • Brand-specific electronics (communicating control boards, variable-speed motor modules, inverter drive boards): frequently ordered in, on both brands.
  • The higher the tier, the more of the unit is proprietary electronics, and the longer a January failure can leave you on space heaters while a board ships.

Decision rule: if you plan to stay past year 15 and want easy repairs, a middle-tier furnace on a conventional thermostat is the safer buy in either brand. Ask each bidder where they pick up parts for the brand they are quoting.

Communicating Controls: Lennox iComfort and S40 vs Trane ComfortLink

Communicating equipment only delivers its full range with the brand's own thermostat. Lennox describes its Signature variable-capacity outdoor units as designed to pair with the Lennox S40 smart thermostat, the successor to the iComfort S30, in a fully communicating system. Trane's XV outdoor units and the XC95m furnace use Trane's communicating platform, ComfortLink II, and its matching Trane thermostat.

That is the lock-in. The thermostat, furnace board and outdoor unit speak a brand protocol, so an ecobee or Nest cannot take over without giving up the features you paid for, and a failed thermostat in year eleven has to be replaced with the brand's current control. Below the top tier this does not apply: Lennox Elite two-stage furnaces and Trane's S9 two-stage furnaces run on a conventional 24 V thermostat.

Buy communicating only as a complete matched system, furnace and outdoor unit together, and only if you are content to stay with that brand's thermostat for the life of the equipment.

Warranty: Both Depend on Registration

Neither brand's factory warranty covers labour by default, and both give their longer terms only to registered equipment. These are the terms each manufacturer publishes; the certificate packed with your model is what governs.

  • Trane: a Base Limited Warranty that typically runs five years, or a Registered Limited Warranty that typically covers parts for 10 years when the product is registered within 60 days of installation. A registered warranty can be transferred to a buyer within 90 days of the home's sale, for a fee.
  • Lennox Merit and Elite: product pages list 5 years on parts or covered components as the base term. Elite adds a 10-year extended limited warranty with product registration, and Merit offers extended coverage through registration as well.
  • Lennox Signature: a 10-year limited warranty on covered components, and a 20-year or lifetime limited heat exchanger warranty depending on the furnace.
  • Lennox labour: with registration, the owner can select up to 3 years of labour coverage. The basic limited warranty transfers to later owners; the extended one stays with the original owner.

Get it in writing who registers the equipment, you or the installer, and keep the confirmation with the invoice. An unregistered furnace falls back to the shorter base term, and nobody notices until a part fails in year seven.

Verdict: Lennox or Trane for an Ontario Home

  • Choose Lennox if you want the higher top-tier furnace efficiency of the two, you are buying the full Signature system with its S40 thermostat, and your installer works with Lennox every week.
  • Choose Trane if you want a two-stage variable-speed furnace on an ordinary thermostat, or a variable-speed outdoor unit without stepping up to a modulating furnace.
  • Choose on the installer if both quotes are middle tier. The heat-loss calculation, the venting and the commissioning decide how either furnace performs.
  • Skip the top tier of both if the ducts are undersized; fix the return air first.

We service both brands and install to a written quote that names the model numbers, the thermostat and who registers the warranty. For the wider field, see our furnace brand guide for Ontario. To price either brand for your house, start with furnace installation or book a free quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lennox more expensive than Trane?

At the same tier the two are close, and the installer's scope moves the price more than the badge does. Lennox's Signature models and Trane's top models both carry a premium over value brands. A large gap between a Lennox quote and a Trane quote almost always means the two are pricing different tiers, different venting work or a different thermostat.

Can I use a Nest or ecobee with a Lennox or Trane furnace?

On single-stage and two-stage furnaces from either brand, yes: they accept a conventional 24 V thermostat. On communicating equipment, a third-party thermostat either will not work or will reduce the system to basic staging. If you already own a smart thermostat you like, tell the installer before the quote so the equipment is chosen to suit it.

Are Trane and American Standard the same furnace?

They are sister brands from the same manufacturer, built on shared platforms with different badges and model names. A technician who services one services the other, and parts cross over. If an American Standard quote comes in lower than a Trane quote for the equivalent model, you are mostly comparing dealers, not furnaces.

Do I have to buy the same brand of air conditioner as my furnace?

Not on conventional equipment. A two-stage Trane furnace can run a Lennox air conditioner, provided the indoor coil and outdoor unit are a rated match. On a communicating system the furnace, outdoor unit and thermostat must all be the same brand, which is one more reason to replace both halves together if you are going top tier.
