Generator Gas Line Installation

Generator gas line installation starts with arithmetic, because a home standby generator is usually the largest gas appliance on the property: a 20-kilowatt-class air-cooled unit can burn around 300,000 BTU an hour at full load, three times what many furnaces use. A TSSA-licensed technician sizes the pipe from that figure and the length of the run, checks that the meter can supply it, and pressure-tests the line. The transfer switch and wiring belong to a licensed electrical contractor under an ESA permit.

The generator's installation manual gives two numbers that govern the gas side: fuel consumption at full load and the pressure window the unit needs at its inlet while running. Both have to be met at the same time as the furnace, water heater and anything else that will run during an outage, because an ice storm is exactly when the furnace is firing. A generator that starts on its weekly exercise and then stumbles under real load in January is nearly always starved for gas, not broken.

Run length drives pipe size as much as load does. Generators sit outside, clear of windows, doors and vents as the manufacturer's instructions require, and that spot is often on the opposite side of the house from the gas meter. Twenty metres of pipe at this load is a different diameter than five. The usual answers are a dedicated run from the meter in larger steel pipe, buried polyethylene with a tracer wire and proper risers where the route crosses the yard, or a 2 psi line with a regulator at the generator.

The meter is checked before anything is ordered. A residential meter set sized for a furnace and a water heater often cannot pass a generator's load on top, so when the added load exceeds the existing set we request a meter or regulator upgrade from Enbridge Gas, and the utility works to its own calendar. That lead time is the reason to call the gas fitter when you choose the generator, not the week it is delivered. On rural lots around Kilbride, Carlisle and Caledon with no gas main, the unit runs on propane and the propane supplier sizes the tank and first regulator.

The work splits cleanly between two licences. We run and test the gas piping, fit the shut-off valve and sediment trap at the unit and connect the manufacturer's flexible fuel line, installed straight instead of bent into a corner. A licensed electrical contractor sets the transfer switch, runs the conductors and files the ESA permit, and the generator dealer handles the pad and start-up. Call the gas fitter when

  • You have chosen a standby generator and need to know whether the meter can feed it
  • The generator dealer's quote says gas piping is by others
  • An existing generator starts, then surges or stalls when the house load transfers
  • The generator shares a branch with a barbecue or pool heater that was never sized for it
  • You are on propane and adding a generator to a tank that already feeds the furnace

How it works

1. Size from the spec sheet

Send us the generator model and we pull its full-load consumption and inlet pressure range, add the rest of the house, measure the run and check the meter badge. The written quote states the pipe size and whether Enbridge is involved.

2. Utility request, then pipe

Where the meter set has to change, the request goes to Enbridge first. Then the line is run, supported, protected where it is buried or exposed to traffic, and held under pressure on a gauge.

3. Commission under load

With the electrician's work passed, the unit is started and loaded while we read gas pressure at its inlet with the furnace and water heater firing. If the reading stays inside the manual's window, the job is done; contact us with your model number to begin.

Common questions

Can the generator share the barbecue or furnace line?

Rarely. Those branches were sized for a fraction of what a standby generator burns, and teeing into them drops the pressure for everything downstream. A generator normally gets a dedicated run from the meter. The sizing method is the same one described under gas line upgrade, applied to a much larger number.

Who pulls which permit for a standby generator?

The electrical contractor files the notification with the Electrical Safety Authority for the transfer switch and wiring, and ESA inspects it. The gas piping is done and certified by a TSSA-licensed technician under CSA B149.1. Municipalities may also have rules on where a generator can sit, so check setbacks and noise by-laws with your building department.

How long does a meter upgrade from Enbridge take?

It varies with the season and the utility's workload, and we will not guess at it for them. What we control is the order of work: the load summary is submitted as soon as you pick a generator model, so the meter change is in the queue while the pad, electrical and piping are being scheduled.

Does a portable generator need a gas line?

Most portables run on gasoline and need no gas piping. Some dual-fuel and tri-fuel models can run on natural gas through a quick-connect outlet, a small branch much like a barbecue line and covered under gas line installation. Either way, a portable feeds the house only through a transfer switch or interlock installed by an electrician.

Will the generator run my furnace and air conditioner?

That depends on the generator's kilowatt rating and how the electrician sets up load management, not on the gas line. The gas side simply has to deliver full-load fuel to the generator and the furnace together. Running a gas furnace on a generator covers the electrical side of that question.
