What does Lennox furnace error code E227 mean?

Reviewed by Zobir, licensed technician

Quick answer

Lennox furnace error code E227 means the low pressure switch opened during the trial for ignition or in run mode: the switch closed, then dropped out. The burner shuts down each time and the furnace resumes when the fault clears. Check the outside vent terminations for frost and note whether it happens in wind or deep cold. Repeated E227 needs the operating pressure measured.

On a Lennox furnace, error code E227 means the low pressure switch opened during the trial for ignition or in run mode. The switch closed, the furnace started to light or was already heating, and then the switch dropped out. That wording is from Lennox's ignition control diagnostic code table for the EL296DFV. Codes differ between models, and the legend on the label inside the furnace panel is the authority for yours.

E227 is the intermittent one: the switch closed, then let go

The detail that matters is the sequence. Draft was good enough to close the switch and start the cycle, so the vent is not fully blocked and the inducer is turning. Something then pulled the draft down for a moment. That is why E227 comes and goes, and why it can show up only on certain days.

A low pressure switch that fails open and never closes in the first place is E223, which has a more straightforward list of causes.

Is it safe to let a furnace short-cycle on E227?

For a night, yes. The burner shuts down each time the switch opens and the furnace resumes when the fault clears, so the safety is working as designed. For a whole winter, no. Every interrupted cycle is another ignition, and a furnace that keeps dropping out heats the house in short bursts while the ignitor and inducer take the extra wear.

Check the terminations for frost and keep a short log

  • Look at the intake and exhaust pipe ends outside. Frost growing inward from the rim of the exhaust narrows the opening without closing it, which is a partial restriction.
  • Brush off loose frost and snow by hand. Leave anything bonded inside the pipe for a technician.
  • Write down the time, the outdoor temperature in °C and whether it was gusty each time the code appears.
  • Note which wall the pipes are on and which way the wind was blowing.
  • Record whether the code shows up right at start-up or partway through a heating cycle.

That log is the difference between a one-visit repair and a furnace that behaves perfectly while the technician is standing in front of it. Why ice builds up on a furnace exhaust pipe explains what normal frosting looks like and what is too much.

Likely causes of E227, in order

  • An intermittent vent restriction: frost at the termination in deep cold, or a screen partly matted with debris.
  • Wind gusts at the termination. Houses facing open water along Lake Ontario, or sitting near the Niagara Escarpment brow in Hamilton and Waterdown, are more exposed to gusts hitting the pipe ends.
  • Condensate partially blocking the trap, or pooling in a sagging section of vent pipe. The water shifts as the furnace runs and chokes the draft for a few seconds at a time.
  • A marginal inducer or pressure switch: one that makes just enough draft, or closes just barely, so any small disturbance opens the circuit.

How a technician pins down an intermittent pressure fault

The operating pressure has to be measured with the furnace running, not assumed. A manometer on the switch hose shows how much margin there is between the draft the inducer holds and the point where the switch opens. A healthy furnace has room to spare; an E227 furnace is usually sitting close to the line.

From there the vent is walked end to end for sags and for slope back toward the furnace, the trap and drain are opened and flushed, and the termination is compared with the installation instructions. Where the pipe has dropped between hangers, furnace vent pipe repair is the fix, not a new part.

  • Drain and trap cleaning: $150–$350
  • Pressure switch replacement: $250–$500
  • Inducer motor replacement: $400–$900
  • The service call is $90–$150 and comes off whichever repair you approve
  • Re-supporting or re-pitching a vent run is priced in writing after the inspection, because access decides the labour
